New Miller Waste Systems Contract Brings Savings!
September 26th Miller Waste Management begins a new waste pick up program potentially saving citizens $9.1 million over its 7 year term.'The partnership with Miller Waste will position Kawartha Lakes as a municipal leader in waste management technology and innovation,'said Mayor Ric McGee. 'Transitioning to new ways of doing business and the elimination of land filling waste is the ultimate goal for Kawartha Lakes.'Other qualitative items such as research and development of green initiatives, fair
adjustments in reaction to inflation (CPI indexed), gas surcharges, etc. are part of the contract.
'We are pleased with the environmental initiatives that Miller Waste Systems will be undertaking,' said Director of Public Works Michelle Hendry. 'This is a positive step forward for the city.'Miller Waste System’s fleet will be equipped with GPS technology to aid in tracking of vehicles, they will make use of bio diesel, and adhere to a clean air policy. An annual update will be provided to the city with reports on their research, and development for Green Fleet initiatives such as compressed natural gas fuelled vehicles. The annual report will also provide an implementation plan for additional green initiatives to be utilized by Miller Waste Systems.
'Miller Waste Systems is pleased to report that approximately 50% of the employees hired for this contract are former GFL employees, and the remaining 50% are current Miller employees who reside in the City of Kawartha Lakes,' said Hendry.Miller Waste Systems begins curb side collection September 26th. Although collection days will remain the same, collection times may change. Residents are reminded to ensure materials are placed at the curb by 7:00 am.
