Omemee Scouting Thanks Community
1st Omemee Scouting would like to thank our community for your continued support with our annual Scout Popcorn and Apple Day fundraising projects to help our programs run. Also, we would like to thank the residents of the Omemee area for your continued support with our bottle drives; your support helps reduce the costs of youth going to camps.Omemee Scouting Activities
Our scouting groups started the year off with an all-section bowling night at Peterborough Bowlerama. We had a total of 50 youth come out to bowl. The Scouts visited Kawartha Settlers Village for their Halloween event, while Beavers participated in an area Fall Fun Day,Omemee Scouting: Remembering Our Veterans
Beavers took part in their own small Remembrance Day Service. After the Service, all the Beavers were able to make a poppy. The Cubs, Scouts and Venturers had two special speakers come to talk to the youth and leaders; Fred Allison and Christopher Bulger.Fred Allison was a mechanic during WWII and was stationed overseas on the front lines repairing tanks and other heavy equipment. Mr. Allison added his personal reflections and experiences which made the youth look past the statistics and remember that the soldiers were normal, everyday people.
Christopher Bulger spoke about his brothers' involvement in the war in Afghanistan. Nicholas Bulger was killed in the line of duty. Christopher shared a news video that his brother made for Canada Day, explained Nick's role in the military, what mission he was on when he died and the importance of Remembrance Day. Christopher's story brought tears to our eyes and made the youth realize that war is not just something that you read in a history book. There are still brave men and women fighting for freedom to this day.
Omemee Scouting: Learning By Doing
Omemee Cubs and Scouts visited the Kawartha Wholesale Bakery, to learn how baked goods are made. Also, this month the Scouts took part in a conservation project in Cobourg with the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters and the 6th Cobourg Troop. They had a full day devoted to learning about Atlantic Salmon, ecosystems, water management, stream habitat and forestry initiatives. They were able to cut live willow and dogwood stakes and planted them at Sinclair Park to stabilize the stream bank. This activity will go towards several different environmental badges. Between the two Scout Troops, they were able to cut and plant 225 live stakes. Special thanks to Matt Burley from the OFAH for sharing his vast knowledge with the youth.
