Successfully Growing Dahlias -Malcolm McDonald
Malcolm McDonald, an avid Cobourg area dahlia grower, grows about 100 dahlias and 1000 gladiolus each year in his Baltimore garden. Malcolm gardens for pleasure, so he doesn’t “market” his flowers, but gives many to neighbours and friends. Malcolm will share photos of some of his favourite varieties, and well as offer tips on successfully growing dahlias, and caring for and storing the roots over winter. He will also demonstrate how to divide the roots to start new plants.
Malcolm, a father of 4 and grandfather to 6, lives in Cobourg with his wife. He was trained as a Food Microbiologist, and retired in 2008 from Kraft Canada. Other gardening interests include hybridizing, growing African Violets under lights and Japanese and other flower arranging. Malcolm is a member of the Cobourg Horticultural Society and has volunteered at the District Horticultural Society Level as well.
