Whom did you publicly thank today?Often after a person is no longer with us we wish we had been more thankful towards them. Fleming College is offering you the opportunity to tell everyone about those wonderful hidden gems in our communities.
Rural Community Angels
While many obvious rural community angels spring to mind - doctors, nurses, volunteer firefighters, EMS, and teachers; there are many who work behind the scenes for little praise or profit. Rural communities run on volunteers. People who see there is a problem, roll up their sleeves, and set to work to become part of the solution.These volunteers aren't seeking fame or fortune - but simply want to make our communities better places to live, work , and visit. While volunteers may get private a thank you from individuals, by shining a public light on their good deeds, you can encourage others to do the same. Here is a partial list of some rural angels who might get overlooked. Please add to this list in the comments below:
Often you will find Rural Community Angels wear many halos, and are members of multiple service clubs like Lions and Lioness,or faith- based groups; other times, a rural angel may perform deeds alone or you may not even know who performed the minor miracle that created a big difference in your day. Take this opportunity to thank at least one rural angel. Nominate someone for a Fellowship in Applied Education Award today!
• Clothing the Poor: Volunteers at Fresh Start Omemee, and the Rainbow Thrift Shop Janetville give previously loved items a fresh start, and people a hand up.
• Feeding the Hungry: Food bank volunteers throughout our rural area, try to help the hungry as do the organizers at Omemee Christian Outreach,and the Omemee Foodbox delivery Committee.
• Improving Health - Community Care Friendly Visitors and Drivers, Medical Centre Board Members
• Educating our Children: Sunday School teachers,school volunteers, youth group leaders nurture our future.
• Beautifying our Surroundings - Horticulture Club members put countless hours into making our area beautiful
• Community Connectors - Those you call when you need a ride, something picked up, or even a telephone chain to get the word out that help is needed
• Supporting Seniors - Volunteers who offer community events, deliver Meals on Wheels
• Caring for Voiceless - Animal Rescues like Freedom Valley Horse Rescue, and Parrot Adopt Ontario
• Protecting Our Environment - Trail and Conservation Volunteers
• Preserving Our Past - Historical Society Members, Museum Volunteers
Fleming College Invites Nominations for the Fellowship in Applied Education Award
Fleming College is seeking nominations for the 2012 Fellowship in Applied Education Award.
Through this award, Fleming College honours a citizen who has demonstrated dedication to community betterment through work or volunteer activities. To be eligible, the candidate must work and/or reside in the City of Kawartha Lakes or Haliburton, which are served by Fleming College. The candidate also must have demonstrated a commitment to improving the quality of life within their community. Past nominees are eligible.
The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 14, 2012. The awards will be presented during Fleming’s Convocation Exercise. Past recipients have included community members Jim Blake of Haliburton and Andrew Wallen of Lindsay.
