Many Flooded Roads Reopened
The Burnt River flooding situation has moved into the recovery phase. Many roads were reopened. Roads in the Black River area will likely remain closed until Monday to allow them to dry out. An up-to-date list of road closures is available on the city's website at www.city.kawarthalakes.on.ca.
Seasonal residents are encouraged to check the list of road closures to ensure their property is accessible. Please use extreme caution when in the flood affected areas.
Canadian Red Cross Volunteers Beginning Door to Door Assistance
Canadian Red Cross volunteers will be going door-to-door to homes in the Burnt River and Black River areas this weekend ensuring those affected by flooding are safe and well, and have supplies to begin the process of cleaning their homes.
Red Cross volunteers are highly trained and can easily be identified by their Red Cross vests.
Disastor Relief Fund
The municipality has established a committee to prepare an application to the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program for provincial funding. The city will be making a request to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to declare a disaster area as the first step in this process. While it is hoped some funding may be received from the province to help with infrastructure repairs, any possible relief for individuals, depends upon local fundraising. The City of Kawartha Lakes set up a trust fund to help facilitate private donations for disaster relief as we have received requests from concerned citizens wanting to contribute. Donations will be accepted at all Municipal Service Centres or can be made at the Lindsay Royal Bank, to the Disaster Relief Trust Account. Charitable Donation receipts will be issued for all donations over $10. This account will be turned over to the Disaster Relief Committee once it is established.
