Help for Smokers -Fewer Places to Light Up Plus Free Nicotine Patches!

Three Initiatives Begin This Month That May Help Quitters Keep New Years Resolutions!

January1, 2015 new regulations came into effect further restricting the places where smokers can light up.  In addition to these new restricted public places, in Ontario two initiatives return that can also help people quit smoking and even strengthen the resolve of non-smokers to not start smoking.

Here are details on these three initiatives.

January 1 2015 New No Smoking Areas

Starting Jan. 1, 2015, new Ontario regulations came into effect that will protect youth from the dangers of tobacco and support the government's commitment to achieve the lowest smoking rate in Canada. Although intended to protect children and teens from cigarette smoke, burning embers, and temptation, these restrictions may also help people trying to quit smoking while making life more enjoyable for asthma sufferers.
The new rules include:

  • Selling tobacco on post-secondary campuses and schools - prohibited, 
  • Smoking on all restaurant and bar patios -prohibited.
  • Smoking on children's playgrounds - prohibited.
  • Smoking on publicly owned sport surfaces -prohibited.
These measures may help smokers quit by increasing places people are legally required to butt out.

Free Nicotine Patches - S.T.O.P. Program

Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge Health Unit is offering free Nicotine patches to smokers wanting to quit who take part in the S.T.O.P. program beginning January 12th in Lindsay. The program run in partnership with the has shown a great success rate over the past years. See more details at the link in the related links below.

Which Smoker Are You? Young Adult and Post Secondary Contest

Ontario post secondary students, and young adults 18 to 25 could win cash prizes for not smoking in the Would You Rather Contest. There are even prizes available for non-tobacco users, and buddies.
