Frugal Shopping Tip of the Week - Cheese

Cheese goes on sale about every 6 weeks, by figuring out how much cheese your family eats in a six week period, you may be able to strech your grocery budget. Watch carefully when purchasing the cheese to be sure it is the variety and brand that is on sale.

Choosing Cheese

CalorieKing.com says that a one once of Havarti cheese has about 8 g of total fat and 5 g of saturated fat. In comparison, 1 oz. of cheddar cheese has 9.3 g of fat and 5.9 g of saturated fat. Mozzarella cheese is made with part skim milk, so it only has 4.5 g of total fat and 2.9 g of saturated fat per 1 oz.. Saturated fat is the type of fat that is the most dangerous to the heart.

Storing Cheese

According to Dairy Goodness.ca A Canadian Dairy Farmer Website,
You can freeze cheeses, in pieces of 500 g or less, for up to two months. Make sure they are carefully wrapped in plastic wrap and place them in an airtight freezer bag. As with all types of cheeses, it is important to cool before freezing, and to allow the cheese to thaw slowly in the refrigerator, which allows it to regain the humidity lost while frozen.
