Tips for  Winning Washers Team

Organizer, Mike McGrath in an interview with the Lindsay Daily Post points out: ‘Washers is a game that anyone can excel at, no matter what their athletic ability, gender or age is. Washers has many similarities to horseshoes, but one way in which the scoring differentiates from horseshoes is that if the washer hits the ground and bounces into the box or cup, it still counts. Everyone has a lot of fun and we raise money for serious causes.’
Mike McGrath further explained:’The game of washers has 20 or more variations, and can be played with washers as large as your hand, with variations in the number of washers used and the distance they are tossed.’
How to Win at Washers Here are the finer points of the game as it is played in Omemee:
The object of the game is to be the first team to score 26  points by tossing  Toonie-sized washers, into a four inch high cup set 16 feet away. Each washer you get in the cup scores 4 points. However, just like in Horseshoes, close counts -get your washer inside the square foot box, in which the cup is set, for one point. You get 5 tosses, then your partner tosses the five washers back to the target at your end. The first team to score 26 points wins. Pretty simple! Even you could be a winner!
Why Omemee? What has been a fun family game, for long-time Omemee residents Mike and Brenda McGrath took on new significance, five years ago, when both Mike's sisters; Pat Muylaert, of Nobleton, and Marg Moore, of Bobcaygeon; were diagnosed with breast cancer. Pat and Marg both survived the disease, and are part of Pat's Mariners Dragon Boat Team. Looking for a way to raise funds to help in the fight, the McGrath's hit upon the idea of holding a Washers tournament.  The Omemee World Series of Washers Tournament has raised over $4.500 to date in addition to the entry fees for the Dragon Boat race. Money from the washers tournament is donated to the Dragonflies Breast Cancer fund for area hospitals.
Mike, and his wife Brenda have been holding monthly tournaments for charitable causes in the village leading up to this month's annual International tournament. The fourth-annual tournament will be hosted at the Emily-Omemee Community Centre and feature over 60 teams in five categories: men, ladies, mixed, under 20 and 50 and over. Winners of the five divisions play off for the grand championship.
The Challenge  So are you ready to a top being a couch potato and have a great time? Come out and join in the fun!Entry fee for the Omemee World Series of Washers Tournament  is $25 per two person team, or $20 per team in the under 20 category. For information call Mike or Brenda at 705-799-7177.
