Yelverton United Church Blessing Cattle,Wild Animals,Pets Today!
Special Yelverton United Church Service!
Yelverton United Church Minister Rev.Mary-Margaret Boone will have a unique congregation at church this morning at 11:30 a.m. Today, in addition to congregations from Janetville United Church, and Mount Horeb United Church, people from near and far will be bringing their animal friends to the country church just west of Yelverton, a short jaunt south of Omemee.Unique,Unusual Animals Welcome Too!
Reverend Boone began Blessing of the Animals services, when she was first in training as a United Church minister. At this time she and a colleague, who was at Dunsford United Church, wondered which of them would have the most unusual animal at their service. While her colleague was very pleased to have a calf at his service, he had to admit one animal at at Reverend Boone’s service was truly unique-a flying squirrel!Blessing Animals-History
The Blessing of the Animals began with St. Francis of Assisi in Italy in the 1200s. According to legend, St. Francis,well-known for his love of nature and animals, blessed a wolf that had been ravaging livestock and people, bringing an end to their problems.Animals have long been part of the church picture, during the Middle Ages, altar rails frequently served to keep livestock and dogs off cathedral altars.Today, pets are often an extension of the family, and vitally important to people's lives.
While ‘The Blessing of the Animals' services are often held in the fall around the time of the birth of St, Francis, October 4th, holding services during dry, warm weather, allows more animals to be comfortably transported to church.
