Local Food Strategic Session Coming Soon!

Food Producers, Processors, Retailers and Eaters Your Input Needed!

Are you a locavore? City of Kawartha Lakes invites the public who have an interest in local food to attend a free public strategic planning session for the development of a Local Food Action Plan. The workshop will be held on March 20, 2012 at the Ops Community Centre, Lindsay from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm.

'We have completed the surveys for the business retention and expansion project, and we are now ready to present the findings to the community,' says Kelly Maloney, City of Kawartha Lakes Agriculture Development Officer. “Based on the information collected we are looking to identify market opportunities and identify new business and economic development opportunities.

Erik Lockhart of the Queen’s School of Business will be facilitating the day long session with the goal to gather input from food producers, food processors, retailers and eaters and develop the framework for a Local Food Action Plan .
Data is based on surveys conducted in the summer and fall of 2011 with businesses that produce, or promote food from local farms. Businesses from Kawartha Lakes and eight other eastern Ontario counties or cities were surveyed. Developed in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs -OMAFRA, these surveys identify the strengths and challenges faced by participating businesses. The results from the survey are being used to develop community strategies to help Local Food Producers, Processors and Retailers find new markets and identify opportunities to increase revenue.

Register for this free planning session by contact 705-324-9411 ext. 1232 or see full details at www.AdvantageKawarthaLakes.ca .
