Wearing the Green!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world by people Irish,or not. On Saint Patrick's Day. People brush off the old Irish tunes,Irish tales, Irish movies, and celebrate Celtic heritage in general.

From live shamrock plants, to cakes, to candles, to green beer;you can find a wide variety of green products even in small places like Omemee, Millbrook, and Fowler's Corners - but what is Saint Patrick's Day really all about?

Who was Saint Patrick?

Patrick was born in Wales, captured by invaders, and sold into slavery in Ireland at age 16. He escaped six years later and returned to his family. later, after joining the church,Patrick returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop in the north and west of the island. There are many legends about Patrick including one in which he rids Ireland of snakes, and another being his explanation of Christianity using the Shamrock. By the seventh century Patrick was recognized as the patron saint of Ireland.
Saint Patrick's Day is observed on March 17, the date of Patrick's death. It is celebrated both inside and outside Ireland, as both a liturgical and non-liturgical holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemn and a holy day of obligation; and, outside Ireland, it can be a celebration of Ireland itself.

You can find Shamrocks and more at Butternut Folk Art 18 King East, Omemee.

Local Food Strategic Session Coming Soon!

Food Producers, Processors, Retailers and Eaters Your Input Needed!

Are you a locavore? City of Kawartha Lakes invites the public who have an interest in local food to attend a free public strategic planning session for the development of a Local Food Action Plan. The workshop will be held on March 20, 2012 at the Ops Community Centre, Lindsay from 9:30 am – 3:00 pm.

'We have completed the surveys for the business retention and expansion project, and we are now ready to present the findings to the community,' says Kelly Maloney, City of Kawartha Lakes Agriculture Development Officer. “Based on the information collected we are looking to identify market opportunities and identify new business and economic development opportunities.

Erik Lockhart of the Queen’s School of Business will be facilitating the day long session with the goal to gather input from food producers, food processors, retailers and eaters and develop the framework for a Local Food Action Plan .
Data is based on surveys conducted in the summer and fall of 2011 with businesses that produce, or promote food from local farms. Businesses from Kawartha Lakes and eight other eastern Ontario counties or cities were surveyed. Developed in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs -OMAFRA, these surveys identify the strengths and challenges faced by participating businesses. The results from the survey are being used to develop community strategies to help Local Food Producers, Processors and Retailers find new markets and identify opportunities to increase revenue.

Kids on The Block Puppets on Your Block!

CMHA-Peterborough Branch is pleased to once again be offering performances of the Kids on the Block, a special troupe of educational puppets that dress and act like real children. Each one has definite likes and dislikes, hopes and fears, talents and limitations. And, like real children, some have differences such as mental, physical and emotional disabilities.

They offer ten lively, upbeat shows designed by Kids on the Block Inc., that deal with the important issues of children's mental health, being a child of divorced parents, and bullies and school safety. Through a new partnership with Epilepsy Peterborough they are also offering two shows about epilepsy.

Kids on the Block will be appearing in free performances over the March Break at area libraries including three rural libraries- Omemee, Bruce Johnston Branch Cavan, and Millbrook. The Omemee performance will be Monday March 12 at 10:30 am; Bruce Johnston on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 am; and the Millbrook performance takes place Wednesday March 14 at 10 am. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar.
