Students - Get $3,000 -Start Yout Summer Company!
Summer Company Now Accepting Applications
The Ontario Government is continuing a fantastic program for entrepreneurial youth this summer, called Summer Company 2013.Last summer, Nathan Jetten, grade 10 was one local student who started his Summer Company,providing farm produce and baby bunnies to local people through his farm gate stand and at the Omemee Market. Here is some field footage of Nathan at Omemee Market.
Do you have ideas for creating your own company this summer?
Students 15 - 29 years old in Ontario and returning to school in September, can turn their ideas into a real business. The Summer Company program provides >up to $3,000>, hands-on coaching and mentoring to help you start and operate your business.
The Kawartha Lakes Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (KLSBEC) is the local provider of Summer Company in the City of Kawartha Lakes and is currently looking for students in our area who want to be their own boss this summer.

Omemee Balloonologist Brings Frosty Fun!
Omemee Baptist Church Christmas Dinner Features Balloon Ministry!
Matt Quibell, balloonologist, brought smiles to the young and young-at-heart during festivities at the Omemee Baptist Church Christmas Dinner on Wednesday, December 12, 2012. While Matt sculpted fantastic reindeer, Santa hats, and snowman corsages, for the children, smiles abounded around the hall at children dancing with glee in their new festive garb.Matt Quibell, grade 11 student at I.E. Weldon, AKA Super Twist the Balloonologist is well-known for his amazing sculptures, and has been sculpting with balloons for several years.

All Ages Eco Water Video Contest Win Fab Prizes!
Canadian Wildlife Federation is celebrating Rivers to Oceans Week in 2012 with their Water’s Worth It! video contest. The grand prize is $2,000 in funding towards a water-conservation project in the winner’s area. The top 10 finalists will receive a one-year subscription to the CWF magazine of their choice either : Canadian Wildlife, Biosphère or WILD magazine. Just send a one-minute video telling what is so special about your local body of water and why it’s worth conserving. This contest is open to all residents of Canada of any age. Entries will be accepted until June 30, 2012,after which there will be onlone voting for your favourite video,so be sure to let usd know about your entry,so we can help spread the word.

OPP Attending Scott Young Boys Night!
OPP Bringing K-9 Member to Scott Young PS
Ontario Provincial Police will be in attendance at Scott Young Public School in Omemee for their ‘boys’ night’ presentations.
May 23, 2012 Scott Young Public School will be hosting a boy’s night presentation for the male students in grades 5 through 8 inclusive. The students will attend three different workshops designed to provide them with new experiences.
The OPP will have a member from the K-9 unit as well as the Emergency Response Team (ERT) in attendance to demonstrate some of the specialties that are utilized by the OPP as they police the province, including the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Canine Teams Constantly On Call
27 Canine teams: each consisting of a dog and a handler are stationed at strategic points across the province and provide canine support for search and rescue operations, tracking wanted persons, detecting narcotics, explosives, cadaver and physical evidence. Canine teams teams are on call 24 hours a day for assignment anywhere in Ontario.
Canine teams undergo 16 weeks of intensive training at the OPP Academy Canine Training Centre. During the first 16week training period dogs are trained to follow specific human scent over various terrains in all weather conditions. The dogs are also taught to protect the handler on command even in the face of gunfire.
Within one year of completing the training, teams return to be trained to detect narcotics.
Some Specialty dogs, usually Labrador retrievers, are trained for specific duties. There are currently 6 teams trained to detect explosives, 6 additional teams are trained to detect human remains that are buried or under water, and 3 teams are trained to locate people buried as a result of a disaster.
