Omemee Annual Carillon Carolling Evening -Join In!

Trinity United Church Welcomes Carillon Carolers!

Omemee Carrilon chimes hours daiiy, Happy Birthday in honour of local citizens occasionally, and hymns on Sundays. However, Christmas the carillon atop Trinity United Church bell tower has a very special program slated.
One night each year, valley villagers and visitors join together in a scene reminiscent of Currier and Ives or Whoville, raising their voices in celebration as the carillon chimes resound in the valley.

During break, friends old and new enjoy hot chocolate and Christmas treats chatting by the wooden creche in the background which stands as a reminder for the 'reason for the season'. Trinity United Church looks forward to welcoming new and familiar faces to the Annual Christmas Carrilon Caroling tomorrow evening, Sunday December 23, 2012 at 7 pm. All Welcome.

Rev. Alan P Boyd Leading Liberal Theology Bible Study!

Reverend Alan P. Boyd, author, 'A Dispensational Premillennial Analysis of the Eschatology of the Post-Apostolic Fathers (Until the Death of Justin Martyr)' will conduct a Bible study entitled 'What's Right with Liberal Theology?'
In a world of people seeking answers, where does Liberal Theology fit in? The study will examine the differences between Fundamentalist and Liberal Theology.

'Liberalism and Fundamentalism exist in many areas-politics,and religion being only a couple of examples.' shared Reverend Boyd, explaining 'One of the main differences is that in Fundamentalism there is only one definitive answer.'

Reverend Alan P. Boyd, internationally known for his much debated Masters Thesis - 'A Dispensational Premillennial Analysis of the Eschatology of the Post-Apostolic Fathers (Until the Death of Justin Martyr)' is the Interim Minister for the Trinity-Bethel Pastoral Charge. Trinity United Church Omemee Celebrates 176 Years!

Trinity United Church Omemee, celebrated 176 years serving our community last week with special music, Guest Preacher, and a luncheon. Zoomer Magazine recently profiled Guest Preacher Reverend J. Newton Reed, pictured below.

''Newton Reed consistently wins gold, silver and bronze medals in masters-level badminton, playing other men 85 to 90 years of age.' His sermon title 'Girls!' made Reverend Allan Boyd do a triple take.

'When I received Newton's sermon title, I wondered if I was reading it correctly, ' shared interim minister Reverend Alan Boyd, adding,'After seeing the pictures in Newton"s Power Point presentation, I understood.'

Girls! Sermon Highlights Importance of Funding Girls Education

Guests at the joint Bethel - Omemee United Pastoral Charge service enjoyed Reverend Reed's thought-provoking sermon which stressed the importance of supporting missions which advocate for women's education.
Reverend J. Newton Reed, special guest preacher, gave a moving sermon connecting Trinity's history to his family's experiences as missionaries in China. Reverend Reed spoke passionately about his sister Edith, adopted into their family at age 6, by paying eight cents to save her from life in a brothel or beggar band. Edith grew up to be a top Christian Chinese nurse, who was later persecuted for her faith, education, and social standing when the communists took power. Reverend Reed, shared how baby girls are disposed of yet today in many parts of the world. He cited many reasons for the importance of supporting missions educating women, in particular, the women of Afghanistan.

Guest Soloist Accompanies Trinity Omemee Choir

Trinity Omemee choir, under the direction of Shirley Robertson, and accompanied by Guest Soloist Betty Archer opened the service with 'He Is Here'. During the service, Betty Archer sang the two solos in beautiful dulcet tones including 'Because He Lives' which so moved the congregation, that Reverend Reed asked her to please lead the congregation in singing a chorus of this old familiar song before everyone dismissed to enjoy the Anniversary luncheon. Trinity United Church choir welcomes you to join them for practice immediately before services each Sunday. This Sunday, for Mother's Day, Trinity choir will be singing that old gospel favourite 'Precious Mem'ries.'

Trinity United Church 176 Years Serving Our Community

Just over 176 years ago, Wesleyans held preaching services in homes, then a log school house on Sturgeon Road. William Cottingham received 20 English pounds from the Wesleyan-Methodist Church of Canada,in exchange for the the land where Trinity now stands in 1842. This is just a bit of the background information from theTrinity United Church Historical Review for the 175th Anniversary written by 'Doc' Forbes McEwen. Over the years Trinity United Church has served our community in many ways. Currently many organizations meet in the wheelchair accessible building, including the Ontario Early Years Centre, Community Care Adult Day Programs, and the Horticulture Society. Soon the Pastoral Charge will be announcing this summer's VIBE youth outreach. Interim Minister Reverend Alan Boyd, his wife Reverend Wendy , and Guest Preacher Reverend Newton J. Reed pictured below cut the cake at the Anniversary celebration, where people from both congregations enjoyed renewing friendships and catching up on changes that have occurred over the past year.

Trinity United Church Omemee Celebrates 175 Years This Morning

From Log Cabin to Computerized Carillon Bicentennial of Changes

Trinity United Church, Omemee, Ontario, has come a long way from its early logcain services to its present day accoutrements which include a computerized Carillon ,and wheelchair lift. Although Trinity turns 175 May 14th, the congregation is celebrating its anniversary this morning in a combined service with Bethel United Church followed by a potluck luncheon.

Trinity United Church, at the crossroads of King, and Sturgeon Streets, occupies a unique location and benefits the whole community. Trinity United Church has been a meeting place for countless groups over its almost two centuries of service.The only church in the village with a wheelchair lift, Trinity United’s accessibility makes it an ideal location for the Community Care Seniors’ Day Program. Other groups which use meeting space at Trinity United include the Ontario Early Years Outreach Program, and the Omemee and District Horticultural Society.

Forbes McEwan, local resident, and member of Trinity United Church has written historical review of the church, in celebration of the Omemee church's 175th anniversary.Here are some notes on the review by Ben Clarke, which was featured in Kawartha Lakes This Week:

According to Mr. McEwan's review, prior to 1836, the Wesleyans in Omemee held preaching services in private homes before a log school house on Sturgeon St. South was used.
Work began on the rectangular, clapboard building which was set on cedar posts foundation with a square tower at the front doorway. A lofty eight-sided spire was added to the church tower in 1861.
A graveyard with many old fashioned marble headstones surrounded the church; but, the ground was full of underground springs and unsuitable for burials. It was not unusual at the time to have a coffin weighted with stones to keep it from floating, Mr. McEwan.
Burials in the church yard were discontinued with the opening of Emily Cemetery and most of the remains and tombstones were transferred there.
The cornerstone for the new church was as laid on July 13, 1876. The new building was constructed in five months and was opened on December 10 of that same year.
The new church had a stone foundation and included a basement Sunday school and a fifty-foot, eight-sided spire.
The original church bell was placed in the spacious chamber at the top of the tower, which had three large louvred openings. From this height the old bell could be heard for miles.
In the summer of 1905, Mr. McEwan's review notes, an alcove was built at the south end of the church for the accommodation of the choir and organ. Two years later, Mr. And Mrs. J.C. Eaton (later Sir John and Lady Eaton) donated a pipe organ. In 1953, the church was given 10 memorial stained glass windows based on the Life of Christ.
By the mid-1980s, the church needed upgrades, including improved kitchen facilities, and in 1992, rooms for a Sunday school, nursery and office. The additional improvements cost $370,000 with $60,000 in a grant from the United Church of Canada and a $25,000 Provincial grant for the elevator. The remaining debt took only eight years to pay off.
A new street clock was erected in 2009, which featured a computer operated Carillon System capable of playing 700 songs over the tower speaker. Funding was provided by church members, community support, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Omemee Hydro Trust Fund and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Ontario Early Years Centre Offers Fun Rural Outreach Program

The Early Learning Centre mobile van from OEYC visits Omemee Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. till noon and sets up their toys and children’s equipment at Trinity United Church. This fully equipped child-based play centre offers parents, grandparents and caregivers an opportunity to escape the isolation of rural parenting while providing fun learning opportunities for their babies, toddlers, preschoolers or kindergarten-aged children. Themed learning ‘stations’ are carefully planned with specific child-learning goals, or outcomes, in mind. Here are some of the activities from their site:

Adult Day Programs Run Twice Weekly
Community Care Health and Support Services offers Omemee and Area Adult Day programs twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. The Adult Day program provides a safe supervised environment for people with disabilities or older adults with impairments. Trinity United Church is wheel chair accessible and has a lift for the convenience of those who have difficulties with stairs. Rides this program are also available through Community Care.

Longtime Village Resident Celebrates Century of Life

Longtime Omemee Resident Marion Taylor Marks Major Milestone

Omemee Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday.

Sunday, February 27th Omemee resident,Marion Taylor marks a milestone with the celebration of her 100th birthday. Kicking off the celebration, Taylor's great-granddaughter and namesake, Adelaide Burns, will be baptized at the 11:15 a.m. service at Trinity United Church.

A very generous woman, Taylor has asked donations be made to Amnesty International, Breast Cancer Research, Five Counties Children's Centre or Trinity United Church in lieu of gifts. Mrs. Taylor will be pleased to see you at one or both parts of her party.
