Omemee Junior Garden Club has been meeting under the leadership of the Omemee and District Horticultural Society (OADHS) for over 65 years. Membership forms were distributed to local schools in March, along with information about the first meeting, which will be held this coming Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Coronation Hall, Omemee.

Currently, there are 25 students registered for the Omemee Junior Gardening Group in Omemee with members ranging from age 5 to 13. The Junior Garden Club has two formal meetings a year one in May,
when they receive seeds, plants, and participate in a craft activity; and another  August 15th at the annual flower and vegetable show, when awards are presented. In the summer, members of the OADHS visit each Junior Member’s garden to judge it, and give encouragement to the young gardeners. Junior members are divided into age categories for the purpose of judging: Sprouts Seedlings, Buds, and Bloomers- Mrs. Grassie noted,"We find the youngest members have the greatest interest in gardening, but there is a great resurgence in interest in ecological and environmental topics in the older group and adults."
OADHS tried hosting meetings more frequently for the Junior Garden Club in the past. but found many parents worked, and were not able to take the time to drive their children to the meetings.

This year, the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer hopes to  help to grow the interest of these Junior Gardeners, by running a weekly Junior Gardening Tips column. Mrs. Grassie said she would make the offer known to the OADHS, at next Monday's meeting, noting that perhaps some of the Master Gardeners from the group, might take turns writing gardening tips for the Juniors.
A Junior Garden Group membership is only $5, whereas a family membership for $15, includes all the children and their parents. While visitors are welcome to attend the OADHS monthly meetings at Trinity United Church, due to insurance regulations, only members are able to attend off-site meetings, such as next Monday's Illuminated Gardens meeting.
If your son or daughter would like to be in this year’s Junior Garden Club, please call Heather Grassie at  705-328-0342 or Dianne Webber at 705-799-6172
