Omemee Students Want You to Honk! Why?
Scott Young PS Students Raising Racket on King Street-Why?
Drivers passing through the village of Omemee today were greeted at the corner of Ski Hill Road and Highway 7 by Grade 8 students from the ‘Me to We’ group from Scott Young Public School. Waving large posters they had designed,students exhorted passing drivers to honk,and were thrilled to get numerous responses. Why were they out on the street in the cold/ What was so important their teacher would take them to the street to get their message out? If you were wondering why you were honking, here is your answer.
Scott Young Public School Day of Silence-With a Noisy Break
If you walked into the school you would be astounded by the silence,and perhaps wonder where all the kids were. Scott Young Public School observed a day of silence - students pledging to stay silent for the day as a fundraiser. So why were students yelling and waving signs at noon on the main street of Omemee?
‘These students are from the ‘Me to We’ group at Scott Young public School’,explained teacher Steven Quackenbush,adding,’They are trying to raise awareness about child poverty and child labour around the world.’
Scott Young Public School is silent today for children who do not have a voice, and are forced into child labour around the world.Each year the ‘Me to We’ group at Scott Young public school chooses a charity for their fundraising efforts.
‘Last year, students at the school chose to raise money for Kenya’ shared Mr.Quachenbush adding, ‘This year our fundraising efforts are for first nations communities.’
When asked if he had heard about what was happening at Attawapiskat,Steve replied that he was but aware of the situation,but looked forward to sharing the information with his students.
‘We will definitely look into (the Attawapiskat situation)’ the Scott Young teacher solemnly intoned ’It definitely fits right in with our focus this year.’
