Baby Destined to Die Turns Three!
Happy Birthday Emma!
Outside Omemee,Freedom Valley Horse Rescue celebrated Emma's birthday. Emma,was destined to die at a horse auction before she was born, but thanks to the efforts of Christine Markle-Welch Emma just celebrated her third birthday. A tragic tale became a happy tale! Rescuing Emma's Mum
Georgia was 8 months pregnant, when we outbid the meat buyer for her. All they said about her was 'she is a mare, and has been bred by a Morgan stud' Howie's father, Harold, was our #1 supporter of all our greatest rescue supporters. Howie's dad grew up in the age that relied on horses for almost everything, and appreciated what we were trying to do. He passed away just 2 weeks before we saved her. She needed a name,Howie's Father's name was Harold George Emmanuel Welch. We couldn't name her Harold, but Georgia really suited her. We discovered that Georgia is a Rocky Mountain Horse, and she was broke to ride. Georgia has been adopted, and her new 'mom' loves her very much!Baby Emma Enters the World
When Georgia's baby was born April 25, 2009, in thinking about a name we went with Howie's Father's name once again. We couldn't name her Harold, but Emmanuel could be modified....so Georgia's baby,a baby that would have been meat was named Emma.Emma Needs a New Home
Emma has been handled since birth, lead, and picks up her feet nicely. I have lain over her back with no reaction. We have worked with Emma from day one, and our big girl is now scheduled for training! |

Advice to 'Backyard Breeders'
I encourage "backyard breeders' to work with their offspring- take responsibility, please don't breed horses just because you want cute babies in your field, that are only suitable for meat when you finally decide to sell them.About the Author:
Christine Markle-Welch, and her husband, Howie Welch, started their rescue in May '08 as a result of watching so many nice horses end up going for meat. To date they have saved over 65 horses from that terrible end, and are always ready to help more. They are a non-profit organization. Although they are not yet registered, they believe that profiting from their horses' situation would be wrong. Their goal is to save, and find homes for as many horses as they possibly can, and work on training those who need it so they won't end up in that position again.
