Accessibility Kawartha Lakes Hosts Inaccessible Luncheon!

Accessibility for All - Oh Really?

Editorial : Suzanne Sholer B.A. B.Ed.

Accessibility Awareness Week, Omemee Diners Club Christ Church Anglican, slated as an accessibility Lunch and Learn location is inaccessible to those with mobility challenges, in addition, the Accessibility Week invitation document sent to businesses, is largely inaccessible to people with vision challenges. How could a government agency, with a Motto 'Accessibility for All' be so short sighted? Were they not aware of the inaccessibility of the venue? Apparently , Accessibility Kawartha Lakes is well aware of the situation. May 14, the problem, was brought to the attention of Accessibilty Kawartha Lakes.

Did they change the venue? No. Did they admit an error in planning? No. Here is their reply:
Accessibility Kawartha Lakes: Yes, we were aware that the Omemee venue was not accessible to everyone however we must mention that we are offering two other session delivering the same program at physically accessible locations in Fenelon Falls and Bobcaygeon. It does involve a short travel but please consider joining us there. We would love to have you!

Too long Omemee seniors, and people facing physical challenges have been excluded from the Omemee Diners Club- a program our tax dollars are intended to fund for them. If Accessibility Kawartha Lakes supports this travesty, to whom shall our disadvantaged turn?

Accessibility Week Invitation - Inaccessible Due to Low Contrast

We received the Accessibility Week Invitation for Businesses to attend a Lunch and Learn presented by Kawartha Lakes Accessibility Advisory Committee in partnership with the Lindsay Downtown Business Improvement Association and the Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce.

Unfortunately, the meat of the message is obscured by posting it in white font on a light grey background- poor communication indeed. While Government communications should be accessible to all, City of Kawartha Lakes communications frequently receive a failing grade from resident Geof Collis, Accessibility Consultant. Geof, uses a screen reader to surf the net, but time and time again cannot access information on the City of Kawartha Lakes Website. Geoff has been petitioning our local government for years, asking them to make their communications accessible to all.
While City of Kawartha Lakes may have its heart in the right place, by recognizing Accessibility Week, it needs to do a than pay Lip service to this issue. City of Kawartha Lakes could be THE retirement haven for seniors, and cash in on the burgeoning Zoomers IF they pay attention to accessibility issues, pull up their socks, and DO SOMETHING about it.
