Ontario Red Tape Rating Upgraded Despite Winning Paperweight Provincial Award!
CFIB Upgrades Ontario Red Tape Rating !
Government of Ontario proudly announced their improved red tape rating by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. However what they didn't announce was an even bigger story. we wondered if there might be more to this story - yes a huge something more!
One wonders if the Ontario Minister of Labour hadn't been credited with such a ridiculous move, would Ontario have received an even higher rating?

Ontario Minister of Labour Awarded Top Red Tape Award
Did you know every business in Ontario could have been charged a fine last year, because someone in the Ontario Ministry of Labour's Office office did mot do their job on time?
According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Ontario Labour Minister Kevin Flynn tied for first place for the paperweight award for causing the most problems for small business in Canada in 2014.
Flynn gets the nod for an absurd regulation he didn’t dream up, but that he certainly has the power to tear down. What is it?
The regulation requires businesses to print the province’s employment standards poster on legal-sized (as opposed to standard letter-sized) paper. Even better? The poster was outdated recently due to changes in minimum wage, and it wasn’t updated for a month thereafter, meaning that all Ontario businesses were non-compliant and subject to a $360 fine!
The CFIB selected a paperweight award recipient from each level of government:
Federal Folly Award ? Congratulate Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), this year’s federal winner for his role in launching Canada’s new anti-spam law (CASL). Complying with the new regime has proven complicated and costly for small business owners, who say it does little to stop real spam while placing onerous requirements on businesses to record and track consent for routine business email.

Municipal Muddle Award? Luc Ferrandez, Mayor of Plateau-Mont-Royal, Quebec, was chosen from a compelling field of municipal nominees for his city’s patio pickiness. A local rule against plastic patio chairs forces restaurants with slim profit margins to spring for more stylish seats. The small business community is standing up in protest!

What is the Paperweight Award?
Each year the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, rates individual provinces, towns, and branches of government on how they reduce red tape and make it easier for people to operate businesses in Canada. People who reduce red tapes are awarded golden scissors awards, while people increasing red tape are given paperweight awards.The CFIB selected a paperweight award recipient from each level of government:

Ontario Government Spin Doctors Put Good Face On Bad Award!
So what was the announcement by the Government of Ontario that had us wondering if the grass was growing greener over the septic tank?
The Government of Ontario lauded itself over squeaking up a notch to win a B+ from the CFIB. The Ontario government patted themselves on the back for passing a law that guarantees they will report on their progress in cutting red tape, however we could find no mention of this on the CFIB website. Huh? Doesn't this sound like creating more red tape?
So how could Ontario have received a higher grade this year with Flynn causing such a kerfuffle?
