Omemee Beach Open! Others? Check Here!

Some Popular Beaches Closed!
City of Kawartha Lakes beach testing results for July 4th show Omemee Beach, in the middle of Omemee, at the end of George Street South open. Omemee Beach has had an excellent track record for water quality this summer, whereas other beaches have not fared so well.

Beach Users Cautioned

Officials from Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit are quick to point out that beach water quality reports are only truly accurate for the day which the water sample was taken. There area a variety of factors which can change water quality practically overnight, a large rain storm for example  is the fastest way water quality can change.Rain water washes fecal material from cats, dogs, birds and other wildlife into storm sewers which flow directly into nearby rivers and lakes. However ,a long hot spell, can promote the growth of the bacteria in the water too.

Beach Water Testing Challenges

Living in an area with so many beautiful beaches is a boon to residents, and visitors alike. It does however, present challenges foe Health inspectors making the rounds in the huge territory they need to cover. Then again, there is the time lapse between when the test is taken, processed and communicated. One idea might be for each community having a beach to have a local person in the City Service Center doing the testing and submission of samples. This would ensure each beach is tested every week

Beach Quality Water Testing Results: Two Posted, One Questionable

This week the water quality reports show two Kawartha Lakes beaches unsafe for bathing having bacterial levels in the water higher than those considered acceptable as set out in the Ontario government’s Beach Management Protocol – Fenelon’ Birch Point, and Bobcaygeon’s Beach Park. Whereas, Foxe’s Beach does not have results available this week.
