No Doctor? Free Pap Tests! Cervical Cancer Screening!

No Doctor? No Problem!

Health Unit Offers Free Pap Tests to Screen for Cervical Cancer -Cancer: Do Not Gamble with your Health!  Regular Pap tests to screen for cervical cancer are recommended for all women who have ever been
sexually active. According to Cancer Care Ontario, approximately 490 women in Ontario are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year. Of these, about 140 women will die from the disease.  Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is making it easier for women without a health-care provider to get screened.

Cancer Screening: Free Pap Tests

'A regular Pap test is vital for a woman’s health, and the lack of a health-care provider should not stand in her way of being screened,' says Denise Smith, a Sexual Health Nurse with the HKPR District Health Unit, adding:'Local women who have a health care provider, are also encouraged to book a regular Pap test,'

Pap tests can find abnormal cells in a woman’s cervix before they turn into cancer. The Health Unit recommends women get a Pap test every year until they have three consecutive normal tests. If this occurs, cervical screening can be done every two or three years. Women who have had a hysterectomy due to cervical cancer, or are over the age of 70 years, should consult with a health-care provider or call the Health Unit to see if they still need Pap tests.

'Cervical cancer is preventable, and the earlier it is detected, the more effective is the treatment,'Smith notes. 'That’s why we urge women to get regular Pap tests and not take a chance with their health.'

This fall, free Pap tests are available for women in Northumberland County, Haliburton County, and the City of Kawartha Lakes who do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Pap tests will be provided at the Health Unit’s sexual health clinics in Lindsay, Cobourg, Port Hope,
Brighton and Haliburton. To book an appointment for a Pap test with a female nurse in their community, women can call the Health Unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577, ext. 205.
