Ecosystem 2000 - Scott Young Public School Wild Imaginings Reality!
Scott Young Public School Wild Imaginings Reality!
by Suzanne Sholer (Omemee Pigeon Editor)
Scott Young Public School,Omemee, Ontario transformed Jack White’s toboggan hill,on Kawartha Trans Canada Trail from barren farmer’s field into Ecosystem 2000. Since 1994, Scott Young Public School staff and students have planted over 13,000 seedlings, 1900 large trees, 1000 shrubs and wildflowers through the Ecosystem 2000 program. What was once a barren farmer’s field, is visibly transforming into a lush habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. We need to put it on the map!Eco System 2000 From Barren Toboggan Hill to Lush Habitat
Older locals, with fond memories of speeding down the barren hill on toboggans, will be pleasantly surprised when they revisit the area. Ecosystem 2000 is easily accessed via the Kawartha TransCanada Trail, as you no longer need to risk barbed wire in your nether regions in a fence scramble. A large sturdy tower marks the entrance, with photos of the students taking part in the first planting showing the progress achieved by the students’ hard work.Eco System 2000 Offers Students Hands On Learning
The Eco System 2000 project helps students to have a better understanding of land use and environmental concerns, and become better stewards of our land. This is key to the future success of the environment, planting the seeds of knowledge within the youth of today. Students sought the advice, and expertise of various organizations to help in their success. In addition to creating a shady reading area at the school, Scott Young students built bird and bat houses, and transplanted species.Eco System 2000:TD Friends of The Environment Funding Support
Thanks to funding from TD FEF, students were able to plant more trees and shrubs in various sections of their acreage north of the school, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF) is a national organization, formed by TD Bank Financial Group, with a grassroots focus that funds local projects dedicated to preserving the environment. They work with Canadians who are committed to protecting the environment in their own community and across the country.Since 1990, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation has provided more than $53,000,000+ to support over 19,000+ grassroots environmental projects in communities across Canada. And every year TD Bank Financial Group contributes an additional $1 million to TD FEF.
