Long Weekend Traffic Keeps OPP Busy!
SEVEN DIE ON ONTARIO ROADS DURING LONG WEEKEND
Eight thousand charges laid during enforcement campaign.
Despite an increased OPP presence on Ontario Roads this past weekend, seven people died.
As Canada Road Safety Week activities wrapped up, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report seven people were killed in seven separate collisions on OPP-patrolled roads and highways.
The OPP laid approximately 8,000 charges during the Victoria Day long weekend period. Of those, 244 were charged with distracted driving, 6,358 were charged with speeding, 108 were charged with impaired driving. 698 others were cited for seat belt infractions.
“The number of tragic fatalities could have been much higher had we not increased our visibility and enforcement throughout the province.' confided Commissioner Chris Lewis adding 'Sadly, even one death on our roads is one too many.”
The OPP also played a key role during enforcement activities that are part of Canada Road Safety Week, which ended May 21st. During the campaign, the OPP laid 9,971 speeding charges, 1,262 seat belt charges, 837 distracted driving-related charges, and 159 charges for alcohol or drug impairment.
OPP Deputy Commissioner, Larry Beechey chairs the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) Traffic Safety Committee which oversees Canada Road Safety Week explained the purpose of the Safe Roads Campaign:
“During these traffic initiatives, our goal remains the same -- reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads and highways,” explained OPP Deputy Commissioner Larry Beechey, adding “Most of the fatalities last week were preventable.”
Tourists Travel Top Speeds
Local Ontario Provincial Police were kept busy this May long weekend with numerous traffic complaints and other infractions. Two tourists were really sifting along the highway, just a stone's throw from Bethany.
May 18, 2012 an officer from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the OPP stopped a vehicle on Highway 35 within the City of Kawartha Lakes. The vehicle had been traveling at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. As a result of the investigation Amir ABDELSAYED, 30 years, of North York was charged with racing a motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused will appear in court on July 10, 2012 in Lindsay, Ontario.
May 19, 2012 an officer from the City of Kawartha Lakes detachment of the OPP stopped a vehicle that had been traveling 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Highway 35 near Fleetwood Road. As a result of the police investigation Kendall MEEN, 24 years, of Newtonville was charged with racing a motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
This second accused will appear in court on June 12, 2012 in Lindsay, Ontario.
