Activating Kawartha Lakes Event Questioned!

Activating Kawartha Lakes or Activating Lindsay?

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013 City of Kawartha Lakes Development Services - Planning Division invites you to a full day session with Dan Burden, an internationally acclaimed expert in creating pedestrian-friendly communities.
The day will include a walk through downtown Lindsay, and Fenelon Falls,as well as plans created for each community. Monique Craig, of The Village Florist, Bobcaygeon raised two valid questions about ths event:

'This walk is scheduled only for Lindsay and Fenelon Falls, why is Bobcaygeon not included in this walk?' Ms. Craig writes, adding,'If Mr Burden’s reputation is worldwide, is he doing this walk out of the goodness of his heart, which I doubt whole heartedly, so what would his fee be and how can the City justify this, when we are in a serious deficit?'

Ed Note: Good questions both! Frequently, it does seem Lindsay and Fenelon Falls are on the receiving end of many special opportunities dubbed 'Kawartha Lakes Economic Development' , like the ill-fated rural transit which only took consumers to Lindsay to shop. Was a study done showing Lindsay and Fenelon Falls residents need to be more active? Are the streets in of these parts of Kawartha Lakes less pedestrian-friendly?

Why Lindsay and Fenelon Falls? Not Disclosed!

Creating healthy, livable, vibrant communities and downtowns in the City of Kawartha Lakes requires the vision and support of everyone. Please join us on Wednesday, June 5th as we learn about creating vibrant downtowns and communities from an internationally acclaimed expert.We are very fortunate to have Dan Burden, Executive Director and co-founder of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, with us for the day.
Dan Burden has spent more than 35 years helping the world get “back on its feet” and his efforts have not only earned him the first-ever lifetime-achievement awards issued by the New Partners for Smart Growth and the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals, but in 2001, Dan was named by TIME Magazine as “one of the six most important civic innovators in the world.” Dan has worked with over 3500 communities in North America on helping them determine the policies, infrastructure and features that make communities successful sustainable places for people for years to come.
The day will also include:

Hearing from other Ontario communities who have experienced the economic and tourism benefits of designing communities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Walking audits facilitated by Dan Burden in downtown Lindsay and Fenelon Falls where he will lead participants through an on-street visioning session to determine how we can build more sustainable downtowns where our streets support all ages, abilities and uses. The WALC Institute will then create a visual representation of what those areas could look like when adapted to support active transportation and aging in place.

Investing in the creation of vibrant communities can only be accomplished through the collaboration of all community stakeholders. If you are a resident, part of the business, health, or recreation community, municipal staff and Council or any group interested in building a healthy, vibrant and walkable community, your attendance is encouraged!
