Canada Wide Free Shingles Vaccines Needed![Editorial]

Ontario Government Free Seniors Shingles Vaccines Not Enough Impact!

Editorial Rant by Suzanne M. Sholer B.A. B.Ed.
This post contains my two cents on the Ontario government announcement of their funding free shingles vaccines for seniors age 65 to 70..
What do you think about this issue?
Be sure to add your voice to the discussion!
Shingles is a horribly painful condition to bear and  providing free shingles vaccines Canada-wide could measurably improve our economy. The Ontario government is now funding free shingles vaccines for some seniors, however to make a real impact on health and employment insurance costs, a Canada-wide shingles strategy is needed.

Kawartha Lakes Voting Irregularities Cause Concern!! [Editorial]

Kawartha Lakes Landslide Mayoral Victory Proclaimed!

Editorial - Suzanne Sholer B.A. B.Ed.
After waiting for technical problems to be resolved, Kawartha Lakes Mayor  was proclaimed in a landslide victory. There are also eight new councillors in the City of Kawartha Lakes. However, several people who voted in person at Victoria Armouries noted anyone who walked through the doors was allowed to vote without showing any ID. Due to irregularities, what should be done?

Loblaw Companies Beef Recall Posting : Our Response

Do you think posting an E.Coli recall alert on a corporate website, eight days after the recall is first issued, shows 'the health and safety of our customers is paramount' to Loblaw Companies? We do not. Consumers need to be notified of such important alerts in a timely manner.

To Whom This May Concern:

Thank you for posting the Butcher’s Choice Recall on your corporate website, December 20, 2012. Due to the severity of this health alert, E. Coli, we are suprised Loblaw Companies did not post this recall when it was first issued, nor post it on the flyer sites where more consumers would see it.

In future incidents, you may wish to also post a picture of the product as well as many companies do.

Communication needs to be received and understood in order to be effective.

Happy Fathers Day Dad!

Editorial : Suzanne Sholer BA. B.Ed.
Fathers' Day,we pause to take a moment to reflect in appreciation on the role our fathers, and fathers in our communities have played in shaping our lives through their efforts. This is my first Father's Day without my dad,and I had no idea how difficult this day would be. Those of you who no longer have your father with you,may understand what I mean. It was tempting to stay at home today, wrapped in thought, but I was glad I made the effort to get out to church this morning, as a very pleasant surprise was instore for the congregation at Trinity United Church,Omemee.

This morning, in addition to the thought-provoking sermon about Simon of Syrene by Reverend Allan Boyd; organist Shirley Robertson, invited a young father to play two solos and accompany her on the trumpet. The pieces Scott Baxter played this morning included one of my father's favourites : 'The Old Rugged Cross'. Listening to Scott and Shirley play this piece together, brought back many happy memories of Mum playing piano, and Dad singing. Here is a short clip that we hope our readers without high speed connection will be able to enjoy.

How Len R. Sholer Founded Omemee Pigeon eFlyer

Dad never used a computer, and had little use for them. Therefore it may surprise many who knew him, to find out that without my Father's guidance, the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer would not exist. Years ago, when I was contemplating whether to take courses in carpentry,or electronics, Dad advised me to work with my mind, rather than my hands.
'All my life I worked at physical labour of one sort or another,'Dad confided in me,adding'And what do I have to show for it? Legs and a body that constantly ache,my hearing is shot too.No.. Work with your mind.Keep your health.'
It was the first time I had ever heard Dad mention how much his torn ligaments pained him. A stoic man, my father had a knack for turning even the most tragic of situations into a joke. I once asked Dad how it was he was able to laugh at some of the experiences he ahd endured during his life.
It's better to laugh, than it is to cry,'Dad shared, adding'You can't change anything by crying about it,but laughing can change a lot.'
My father, was larger than life, known by many in our community. Dad had a big heart, loved to play practical jokes, and would give people the benefit of the doubt - sometimes to his detriment. Dad grew up the son of a single mother, on the wrong side of the tracks,in a time when divorced women were reviled by many - regardless of the horrible marriage they had endured. While Dad was far from perfect at home - like most people he did his best, and knowing my father's upbringing, I marvel at the father he became. Dad's mother was a hands-on disciplinarian to the extreme. Dad feared acting like his mother - We knew Dad was angry about something, whenever he would storm out of the house to be on his own with his bad mood,he feared acting like his mother. Dad had no father himself as a role model, but somehow he became the Dad I remember, admired, and today miss dearly.
I look forward to being with Dad,again when it is time for me to join him in our heavenly home.
Here is the full YouTube version of 'The Old Rugged Cross'Duet for piano and trumpet played by Shirley Robertson and Scott Baxter. Happy Fathers Day Dad!

Did you know Omemee Pigeon eFlyer is written by a mum? Omemee Pigeon eFlyer started in February, as a result of receiving three calls in one week, where each person said 'It’s too bad there isn’t an Omemee Paper anymore’. Coincidentally, each of those phone calls were disappointed with the lack of communication available between our rural community, our schools, our churches, families, non-profit organizations, and businesses.
