New Canadian Firearms Licensing Regulations What Do You Think?
Omemee area residents have hotly debated firearms licensing. Many owners of firearms in our area are farmers who use their guns as a tools - no, not shooting trespassers, but eradicating ground hogs, or for use in emergencies to dispatch an animal in distress. Some gun owners are hunters, and then there are those who compete in sports.

Ontario’s most prestigious conservation awards,seek your nominations. Nominate a conservationist you know to be honoured at the Ontario Federation Anglers and Hunters 84th Annual General Meeting.Choose a category, and let a conservationist know their work is noticed and appreciated.There are many categories of awards,and you do not need to be a member to nominate someone,nor to win many of the awards. Here are the OFAH Conservation Award Categories:

- Professional who in a professional capacity has made the most significant contribution to conservation and the advancement of responsible hunting and angling in 2011.- R. G. Morgan Professional Conservation Award
- Youth Educator who made the greatest contribution to conservation education as a professional or a volunteer during 2011- Larry Wallace Memorial Award
- Hunting Education - for outstanding involvement in the development and/or delivery of Ontario's Hunter Education Program, and/or promotion of Ontario's Hunting Heritage during 2011.-Ontario Hunting Heritage Award
- OFAH Junior Club most engaged in conservation initiatives in 2011- Ministry of Natural Resources Junior Conservation Award
- OFAH Junior Member who made the most outstanding contribution to conservation in 2011 - OFAH Heritage Junior Award
How to Place A Nomination for the OFAH Conservation Awards
Anyone can submit a nomination! Simply provide the name of the club or individual, the award, a description of their achievements, any media stories, testimonials, photos, or other supporting materials that may be available.
The following nominations however, need to be sent to your OFAH zone secretary for forwarding to OFAH head office. Please contact your zone for the deadline.
- OFAH Member judged to have done the most outstanding work for conservation as a volunteer in 2011- Gord Blake Memorial Award
- OFAH Club that made the most outstanding contribution to conservation in 2011 - Mary Pickford Trophy One of the Federation's oldest and most renowned awards.

OFAH Advise: Make Your Hunt Camp as Safe as Your Home!
Smoke Alarms and CO Detectors Save Lives
OFAH remind hunters,and rural homeowners to put fire safety precautions into practice away from home to, in their recent press release. I
t is fall hunting season and across the province, thousands of hunters are taking up temporary residence in their camps and cabins. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the City of Kawartha Lakes Fire Service remind hunters and others enjoying their rural properties to put the same fire prevention measures into place at their cabins as they have at home.
’Time at the camp is a precious opportunity to recharge our batteries and enjoy our hunting traditions with friends and family," said Mike Reader, OFAH Executive Director. "Hunters are extremely responsible when it comes to firearms safety, and we need to be just as safety-minded when it comes to protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and our natural surroundings from the devastation of a fire.’
OFAH:Fire Safety Tips
The following tips will help ensure a safe, enjoyable stay at the camp or cabin:
- Ensure there are working smoke alarms and change the battery at least once a year
- Solve nuisance alarms by installing a smoke alarm with a hush button
- Ensure wood stoves and propane appliances are installed to code requirements
- Keep combustibles well away from stoves and propane fired appliances
- If it is necessary to plug extension cords into appliances, ensure they are of a gauge capable of handling the electrical load.
Hunting Camp Fires Difficult to Reach
‘Fires at remote properties such as hunt camps and cabins are challenging for firefighters to reach. In case a fire does break out, ensure everyone gets out safely by having working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector on each floor,’ said CKL Fire Chief Mark Pankhurst. ‘You may have only two to three minutes to escape, so commit to making your camp as safe as your home.’
