Canadian Jazz Single Nominated for International Award!
Local Percussionist Appearing in Celebration Event!
Lucya Almeida, Omemee Rocks jewelry designer will be celebrating a major accomplishment in May along with other members of the Jim Heineman Dream Band. Jim’s original composition, 'Rh Positive', nominated for best jazz song 2011, was the only Canadian nomination for the Independent Music Awards. 'Rh Positive', the title track to Jim Heineman's latest recording, was selected amongst worldwide submissions and in Jim’s own words is a song about ,'the celebration of women'. 'I will be highlighting our leader Jim Heienman's experience with women artists through out his career in honour of our theme for this event,' shared Lucy Almeida adding 'the 1st being the one and only legendary Mary Lou Williams May 8, 1910 – May 28, 1981.'Jim played 5 nights with Mary Lou Williams at the Fire Hall in Toronto in 1979. They got along so well she invited him to play on her next recording but passed away before he had the honour. Mary Lou Williams was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. Williams wrote hundreds of compositions and arrangements, and recorded more than one hundred records in 78, 45, and LP versions.Williams wrote and arranged for such bandleaders as Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and she was friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others.
The line up of musicians for the evening includes:

• Mark Hundevad – Drums Vibraphone
• Stacie McGregor – Piano
• Sam Heineman – Synthesizer, Drums

About the Jim Heineman Dream Band:
Jim Heineman’s Dream Band plays jazz incorporating many styles of music including swing, bebop, Latin, African, funk and blues; influenced by revolutionary jazz legends such as John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Mary Lou Williams to name only a few. The repertoire is vast but consists mostly of Jim’s original compositions; the result is an old and new sound all at the same, with an interesting instrumentation that includes saxelo, tenor, flute, vocals, piano, synthesizer, drums, bass, percussion, vibraphone and French horn. Jim is a gifted composer; his tunes have rich melodies and an emphasis on groove.

Earl Scruggs Influence Lives Here!
EARL EUGENE SCRUGGS (Jan. 26, 1924 - Mar. 28, 2012)
I was very sad to hear that Earl Scruggs passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.
If you have ever had an interest in a stringed instrument, I encourage you to explore this man's life, and his contribution to banjo players everywhere. The internet will undoubtedly be the best place to find information about his life and accomplishments.
I don`t believe there is a banjo player out there who has not been influenced by Earl in some way and I am no exception.
In the winter of 1974/75, I was attending College in Kingston, Ontario. My friend Joe, invited me to his place to meet some friends who were visiting from his home town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He told me they would be playing a guitar and a banjo, and that I might enjoy listening to them. I had heard banjo music on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show, as well as the Bonnie & Clyde, and Deliverence movies. The experience of hearing it live was something special. I must have had a thousand questions for the banjo player. He told me the music was called Bluegrass, and he used a three finger style of picking developed by Earl Scruggs.
Two years later while browsing a pawn shop in Toronto, Ontario I spotted some banjos. The sight of the banjos sent my mind back to that day at Joe's. I went home with a $50 banjo, and a renewed passion to play. I took that banjo with me to my first Bluegrass Festival in Carlisle, Ontario where I found the holy grail- an Earl Scruggs instruction book!
After two months, and daily repetition of the three finger pattern rolls laid out in Earl's book, I started to hear something that resembled the sound I heard that day in Kingston three years earlier.
The beast had been tamed, and another banjo player was spawned by Earl Scruggs.
Damn! Another one! Oh no!

First Encounters with Earl Scruggs Style

On This Date: Neil Young Live at Massey Hall 07!
Young Released Five Years Ago Today!
"Live At Massey Hall," an album documenting Neil Young's '71 solo concert in Toronto, was issued today in '07.
According to Young, "This is the album that should have come out between After the Gold Rush and Harvest...David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on Harvest, and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why."

Neil Young News just posted a photo that they would like help identifying.The black and white photo,of unknown origin, showing Neil Young, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills & Jimmy Page; appears to be from the time of the 1974 stadium tour in a nightclub somewhere. Possibly CSNY concert at Wembley Stadium, London, England, 1974-09-14?

Neil Young News - Remembering Larry "L.A." Johnson:

Larry "L.A." Johnson: 1947 - 2010Neil Young News posted an article in recognition of Larry Johnson who played an important role in the development of Shakey Pictures. Here is an excerpt from their memorium.
Today marks the 2 year anniversary since Neil Young's long time film maker and producer Larry "L.A." Johnson passed away. He was 62.
To say that it was a terrible blow to Shakey Pictures and the Neil Young community is a vast understatement. "L.A."'s contributions to the Neil canon are immeasurable and he is still missed tremendously.
Neil Young said in a statement:
"He never lost the eye and ear of an original artist, one unafraid to listen to himself first. Even more, he also kept his playful spirit and sense of humor, the things that sparked his heart for a lifetime spent doing what he loved best: listening to music and making movies."
Johnson was one of the original East Coast guerrilla documentary filmmakers in the 1960's. He worked on the legendary "Woodstock" film of the 1969 festival and was nominated for an Academy Award in the sound category.
It was at Woodstock where L.A. and Neil Young first met. Johnson went on to film CSNY at the Fillmore East in 1970 and produce Neil Young’s first film Journey Through the Past.
