Zip! Omemee Residents “Left Holding The Bag”

Speedy Sanitation Workers Clean Up in No Time Flat - Leave Unwary Residents Sitting With Bags of Garbage

The Trash Bag Crop is ThrivingOn Tuesday, residents who had not set their garbage out early were literally left holding their bags. Although the Residential Waste Calendar warns: ”Curbside set out time is 7:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. in some downtown cores)." and " The truck may not always come at the same time every week."
Many Omemee residents, have become used to the recycling truck arriving as late as 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Therefore, rather than put their trash and recycling out early in the morning, or the prior evening, they choose to set it out closer to the expected arrival of the truck that lumbers along the streets.

How Do You Re-Use Plastic? Omemee Women Helping Haiti Make Mats!

What’s Your Re-Use Tip?

Tomorrow is Blue Box Day in Omemee, which means containers, plastic, cans, and Styrofoam trays go in the recycling, but do you have any great re-using tips? Reusing items, rather than re-cycling them, can help reduce your carbon footprint even more.

How do you re-use plastic bags?

Women Helping Haiti Omemee Chapter, re-uses clean three litre milk bags to make sleeping mats for the Homeless in Haiti.  Crocheted sleeping mats are washable, repel bugs and provide an alternative to sleeping on the ground Mats are delivered cost-free, because they are also used as packing material around fragile items en route. An adults mat is 36 x 65 inches, and a child’s mat is 30 x 45 inches. It can take up to 300 milk bags to make one sleeping mat for an adult.
Women Helping Haiti meets for coffee and fellowship every other Tuesday at at the Reaboro-Omemee Baptist Church , 21 Sturgeon St. North Omemee. In addition to preparing milk bags for crocheting into sleeping mats, Women Helping Haiti puts together hospital care kits, and birthing kits for the women of Haiti. Omemee Recycling Day Blue Box Today!

Save Money! Reduce Your Waste!

Recycling Day ? While some people call it Garbage Day, every Tuesday in Omemee is Recycling Day. City of Kawartha Lakes has a two bag garbage collection limit-anything more than that needs to have a pre-paid tag, or you can take it to the landfill. Either option will cost you $3.
Every Tuesday, Omemee residents can reduce their garbage by recycling their waste. On alternate Tuesdays, Omemee has either green fibre (paper) or blue container (plastics, tin) pick up. Please don’t try to recycle anything contaminated with pet waste or motor oil-that’s garbage. Recycled containers must be placed in a recycling bin. They will not be picked up if they are bagged. The only recyclables accepted in bags are shredded paper in a clear plastic bag, or plastic bags bagged in another plastic bag.
Here’s the low down on what you can and can’t put in the recycling bins as well as a few ideas for reusing and rethinking to reduce waste. Please add your ideas in the comments, and we’ll add them to the chart. Download a free Recycling Calendar from the City of Kawartha Lakes site, it  has a tonne of handy info. Click here.
