Tech: BatteryHeads.com [Review]

BatteryHeads.com Online Battery Merchants

By Suzanne Sholer

BatteryHeads.com offers one stop online battery shopping. BatteryHeads.com carries everything from camera batteries to this handy portable usb battery charger. However, how can you be sure buying from an online retailer is safe?

image-BatteryHeads.com portable-USB-charger

Today's household requires many different batteries and battery chargers. Batteryheads.com attempts to fill that need. Will their offerings fulfill your needs? Would you recommend their site to others?

Shopping Online Safety Tips

Recently, local police issued a warning about shopping online through free sites like Craig's List and Kijjiji; advising people to only deal in person with the seller. This is good advice especially where you have no way of knowing the credibility of the individual with whom you are dealing. So how you decide if an online site is - as they say - 'on the up and up'?

BatteryHeads : Shop with Confidence

How do you determine the credibility of online retailers? While an 'About' or 'Contact' page can give a false indication, BatteryHeads.com 'Shop with Confidence' section contains a key link to trustworthy information- an interactive Better Business Bureau link.

image-BatteryHeads.com-Shop-with- Confidence

Checking BatteryHeads.com BBB Rating

BatteryHeads.com BBB rating is A+ However, a fake BBB button is easily created, so I checked it out.

image BBB A+ rating

Clicking the BBB link at BatteryHeads.com takes you to their page on the BBB website. BBB ratings are based on 16 factors. BatteryHeads.com A+ BBB ranking includes factors such as:

• Length of time business has been operating. - since 2004
• Complaint volume filed with BBB for business of this size. only 3 and all resolved
• Quantity of information - BBB has sufficient background information on this business.

Next, to ensure the page was verifiable, I did a search for the company on the BBB site itself. Yes, BatteryHeads.com page on the reverse search checked out.
So, with thousands of batteries and chargers available, and an A+ BBB rating, would you recommend BatteryHeads.com ?
Note:While I was paid to review BatteryHeads.com, this compensation in no way influenced my opinion. Please see the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer Policies for more details.

Coupon Corner : Frugal Dad Spotlight!

Coupon Corner Spotlight Examines Frugal Dad!

Frugal Dad, a respected American personal finance blog recently expanded its award-winning website with the addition of giveaways and a coupon data base including sections such as Frugal Dad Walmart Coupons. How useful will this website be to you?

Frugal Dad Offers Practical Money-Saving Advice

Jason White, founder of frugaldad.com, hates debt, doesn't like risk, tolerates credit card companies, and has a vehement dislike of 'financial “gurus” out there giving advice for the sole purpose of selling lousy investments.' his basic philosophy is:
Spend less than you make; save money for a rainy day; live debt free.

On the home page of Frugal Dad, you will find links to practical money-saving fairly universally applicable articles such as:

• Ways to Reduce Costs on Paper Products
• How to Save Money on Summer Vacations
• Unsubscribe: A Quick Way to Resist the Temptation to Spend

In addition, Jason has designed numerous entertaining and thought provoking infografics which highlight healthy living, shopping tips, and American statistics. Some of the infografics on Frugal Dad include:

• The Case for Beer: Why You Should Enjoy it and Enjoy it Right
• Beef 101: A Guide to What 25% of Americans Eat Everyday
• Emergency Room Dentists: The High Costs of Life or Death Dental Care

Frugal Dad Giveaways

November 2011, Frugal Dad ran giveaways for Amazon Kindle Fires and gift certificates. Currently, there are no giveaways running. However, there is a 2012 Undergrad Scholarship being sponsored by Frugal Dad for USA residents age 16 and up.

Frugal Dad Coupons

Traditionally frugal dad.com focused on practical money-saving and lifestyle advice for busy parents often including coupon or deal listings to help readers save money. Jason decided to add more comprehensive and useful coupon listings, after receiving considerable feedback from readers.
“The new features on the site will, I hope, better help families manage their finances and save money,” White explained in a recent press release.

Clicking on the Coupon Code tab, leads to an extensive link list of various name brand products and stores. Each link in the list, leads to an article about the brand or company. Some of these articles do contain links to online savings, which are graphically designed to resemble coupons. The 'coupons' I clicked turned out to be affiliate links to online stores. However, the affiliate links Frugal Dad provides through their 'coupon' links do provide excellent savings if you live in the USA . For example:
Frugal Dad Walmart Coupon
2 for $20 Game Deal is an excellent buy.

Frugal Dad Worth Worth Visiting

While it was disappointing to see only affiliate links to online stores shipping to the USA in the 'coupons' I perused. I would still recommend Frugal Dad as an extremely informative website. For those living in the USA, I also recommend the savings links posted on the 'Coupon Codes' tab. The Frugal Dad site is packed with great information, but it does have the potential to be even better. I would like to see the Frugal Dad site display links to actual coupons in addition to their deals affiliate links. In my opinion, posting a combination of affiliate and non-affiliate links could increase trust levels in visitors to the site.

Frugal Dad:Coupon Code Tips

Using the affiliate links on a site is like tipping a waitress for good service. Frugal Dad gives good service, and the affiliate links do lead to excellent bargains. However, making sure your tip goes to the right person when using affiliate links can be tricky. If you want to make sure your online spending is credited to a particular site, you will want to clear your cache prior to visiting the site, and enter the website address directly into your browser. Even then, the transaction may not be credited to that site's account if you already have a pre-existing account with a particular retailer. If you have a pre-existing account with a retailer, your purchase might be credited to the new website, depending on the length of time that has lapsed since you visited that online merchant, and the contract the website has with the retailer. Another caveat about shopping online through affiliate links is to make sure the URL in the address bar at the online retailer starts with https before entering any credit card or payment information. Many sites also carry certification badges from companies such as Verisign which can be indicators of trustworthiness.
About Frugaldad.com
Jason White founded frugaldad.com in 2007 after spending years as a representative for various credit card and banking companies. He watched as his customers made poor financial decisions that buried them in debt, and he decided to start a personal finance blog to help average people make prudent financial choices. Since then, frugaldad.com has helped thousands of readers from all over the world with practical advice on saving money and living frugal lifestyles. White now works in software development and lives in Denver, CO.

Note: While I was financially compensated for this post, the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own. Please see the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer Policies for further information.

Hop All Ages Hit Movie!

Hop Sheds Light on Easter Mysteries

Do you know where jelly beans come from? Hop, rated PG, for some mild rude humour, is a fun family romp.

E.B. is the teenage son of the Easter Bunny, but he doesn't want to follow in the pawprints of his father. E.B. runs away to Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a drummer. In Hollywood, he meets Fred, an unemployed slacker who doesn't want to settle for just any job. E.B. pretends he is hurt, and persuades Fred to take him in. E.B. is a terrible houseguest. Back on Easter Island, a power-hungry chick, plots to become the Easter Chick and change Easter. E.B. discovers who he really wants to be, which brings Fred and E.B. together to a showdown to save Easter from the chick.

Hop:Movie Review

My teen and I both thoroughly enjoyed Hop. There are laughs for all ages in the movie, some of which will not even be picked up on by younger viewers. We were especially impressed with some of the extra little touches in the animation, that made E.B. a very believable character. As for the rude humour, well you will never look at a jelly bean quite the same way again. One scene in China, did give us pause, and it also must have been of concern to others too, because right at the very end of the credits, it is revisited. While this treatment does help fix the problem somewhat, we wondered how many people would even see the revisit, due to where it is placed. We think the revisited scene would have better comedic timing,if it were placed before the credits.

Hop:Special Features Review

Special features in the Hop DVD are aimed at teens and up. It was disappointing that there were no special features for younger children. Since we liked the animation so much, we hoped the special features would include insights into the animation process. The special feature that was played repeatedly in our home was the 'All Access Pass with Cody Simpson'. Have a teen daughter? Have your ear plugs ready for when they discover this section of the special features.
We give Hop four jelly beans out of five. Check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think.
Suzanne
Hop is now available for rental just in time for Easter at Mister Convenience, King Street East, Omemee. There are two copies of the movie, but you may want to call ahead to be sure it is available.

Top Newsmakers of 2011

According to today’s headlines in Lindsay This Week, they believe the top newsmaker of the year in City of Kawartha Lakes was Mayor Ric Magee. However, our readers say otherwise. Here are the Top 10 stories from 2011 according to reader popularity –sorry Mayor Magee, you didn’t make the list.

  1. Pigeon Lake Blue-Green Algae Alert Does Not Affect Omemee Area: Does This Alert Affect You? –We ran this article along with a map to show tourists and residents where the blue-green algae was located, after headlines in local papers seemed to indicate Omemee was affected. We hope this article made a difference to our local tourism in 2011.
  2.   Best Friend: Remembering Matt Courneya Omemee Murder Victim -  This tragedy will stay with many of us for years to come. We were honoured to give voice to the victim’s friends, while other media focussed on the perpetrators. An excellent article that must have been extremely difficult for the author to write. We were honoured to feature this piece.
  3. Emily Provincial Park Omemee Limited Campsites Still Available – Emily Park was booked solid almost every weekend this past summer, reservations are being accepted for next May and June now. You can reach the reservations page easily through the link in this article.
  4. Missing Matt - Omemee Youth Life Cut Short! This was the original article we ran, prior to receiving the article from Matt’s best friend. We tried to offer a different perspective than the local papers in our reporting of the incident.
  5.  Bear Essentials Millbrook Invites You to Win a Green Toys™ Dump Truck! – We were pleased to run our first online contest this year This item brought entrants from as far as Victoria BC in addition to our local entrants. 6.  Like Omemee Pigeon? Vote! –We expanded our reach by entering the Circle of Moms Top 25 Canadian Mom bloggers contest, although we entered the contest rather late in the day,we were pleased to receive the support of so many readers. 7. Melancthon Mega Quarry Would Affect Ontario Water Supply: Environmental Assessment Demanded –The groundwater in the area is a source of drinking water for upwards of a million Ontarians. Toronto Star just revisited this story at the end of December. This is an issue that could affect the water supply in all Ontario,if this essential source is destroyed.
  8.   Win Your Christmas Tree! We were very pleased to assist several farms and small businesses in establishing a web presence this year. Potash Creek Farms reported their best year ever. One visitor to their farm told us they found out about Potash Creek Farms through a link we placed on G+ Watch for an iPhone MovieMaker tutorial to come from a visitor
  9. Mount Horeb United Church Garden Party - Great Annual Ham and Salad Supper! We are pleased to help local charitable organizations and churches get their news out. Mount Horeb United Church is just one of the many venues we submitted to Google maps to help people find their way to events easier.
  10.  Hydro One Power Outage Affecting Over 1500 Omemee Area Homes We broke the news on this story, that was overlooked by Hydro One as being a major power outage for our area, because the outages in the rural area between Peterborough and Lindsay were not added together.  Luck would have it.we were by the phone and received the call regarding our farm property.

Looking Forward Into 2012

This coming year,we are looking forward to establishing more regular features in Omemee Pigeon eFlyer, and starting to upload our videos of events in the area as well. Vote For Omemee Pigeon eFlyer! Place Us in the Top Canadian Mom Blogs!

Editorial –Suzanne Sholer
Did you know Omemee Pigeon eFlyer is written by a mum? Omemee Pigeon eFlyer started in February, as a result of receiving three calls in one week, where each person said 'It’s too bad there isn’t an Omemee Paper anymore’. Coincidentally, each of those phone calls were disappointed with the lack of communication available between our rural community, our schools, our churches, families, non-profit organizations, and businesses.

Preparing Special Events Funding Proposals - Tips and Tools!

Kawartha Lakes Special Events Funding Proposals Need Help

Editorial-Suzanne Sholer

Businesses and Groups in Kawartha Lakes need to send in their Special Events Funding Proposals by October 31st. Need Help? Applying for Special Events funding need not be an onerous task. Chances are,if you have run a special event in the past,it may simply be a matter of plugging information into the form, and adding a few tweaks. Earlier this year,I posted an offer of assistance to write proposals for groups and businesses who might find themselves too busy to go through the funding proposal, now time is of the essence! Email me now,so we can get these funding applications in as soon as possible.

Funding Guideline Vocabulary Overwhelming? Solutions Proffered

When speaking with a number of individuals about applying for special events funding,we found there were two predominant responses: people were either:

  • Totally lost in the legalese of the guidelines ,or
  • Overwhelmed by the length of the document.

Free Special Events Funding Session This Week with M.Cunningham Tourism Development

During a phone interview with Margaret P. Cunningham,Tourism Development Officer,Economic Development ~ City of Kawartha Lakes, Ms. Cunningham advised focussing on the checklist of items, rather than the guidelines. Ms. Cunningham also offered to meet with interested parties on Tuesday morning,or Thursday afternoon or evening, of this coming week to do a quick run through of what is required in the application, and to answer questions. Please email http://scr.im/omemee with your 1st, 2nd & 3rd choices of day and time before Monday at 10 am, to take advantage of this free offer. Confirmation of the date, place, and time will be sent before end of business Monday.

Kawartha Pure Special Events Funding Workshop -December

In addition,to Ms. Cunningham's generous offer of assistance, Bill Walker, PUREkawartha, is offering a  five hour workshop in mid December, where participants will plan and write two separate sponsorship proposals :one not-for-profit fundraiser. and one an annual community event. The cost for the five hour workshop would be $20 per person. Interested parties should contact Bill as soon as possible,at purekawartha (at )gmail DOT com so he can confirm a central Lindsay location and date on Friday, November 4th.
