NDP Seeks Fair Auto Insurance Input!

Rural Ontarians know driving is a necessity, not a luxury. Recent changes to the Unemployment Insurance Act requiring people to accept jobs within 1 Hour driving distance, have made driving even more of a necessity. Starting this week, hearings will be held on Ontario’s auto insurance system. The NDP would like to hear your concerns about auto insurance.

image NDP Fair Auto Insurance banner

In many communities, people need their cars to get to work and to school, to take care of elderly parents, and to take the kids to practice.

Getting your vehicle insured shouldn't have to break the bank. But it does, and Ontario families are especially feeling the squeeze. We’re paying the highest rates in the whole country.

Ontario’s rates are the highest because auto insurance is a mess in our province.

New Democrats want to bring consistency to the system. Our first initiative seeks to end discriminatory billing based on where you live.

We need your help to make change.

This is an opportunity for you to be heard.

Do you have concerns about auto insurance?

Have you had a bad experience insuring your car for the road?

Please help us make the auto insurance system fairer in Ontario by sharing your stories.

Email me your auto insurance story right now now at yoursay@ndp.on.ca

Thank you,

Letter to Editor Re Greenshire Eco Farms Article ~

Earlier this month,Omemee Pigeon eFlyer received a lengthy submission from Greenshire EcoFarms, which contained formatting incompatible with our site. After stripping the formatting,we spent 5 hours reformatting part of the article, then posted a portion of the article to our site,as the writer indicated they wished it published as soon as possible. We received the following letter to the editor today from Greenshire Eco Farms:

I wanted to point out that the May 19, 2012 story title "Food Safety Concerns Increases Organic Food Box Interest!", which you edited from our original title, is misleading to readers. We grow following organic principles, but we are not certified organic.

Also, in that same story, below the title and before the first story paragraph, there's an AdChoices for canola, a GMO crop. This is really poor placement. We are completely against GMO crops, and it strikes me as totally incongruent to place a GMO ad in a story on food safety organic growing! One of the reasons food is not safe is because of GMOs. We'd be much obliged if you'd remove it or replace it with a more suitable ad. Thank you very much. We appreciate all your efforts in the community!

Growing a Greater Good -- with you!

Our reply:
Dear Ms. MacDonald,
Thank you very much for your letter explaining Greenshire Eco Farms is not a certified organic farm. We have re- read the article several times, and cannot find the phrase 'certified organic'. Perhaps you or another of our readers could tell us where it is located.
As to the ad at the top of the article: I can understand how such an ad would be very disconcerting to you. However, the ad you see is based on your internet usage. Here is a screen shot of the article showing the ad I see when I visit it - an ad for a dental equipment provider - Denovo Dental. image Google Adsense
We do not choose the ad that appears at the top of each article, it is based on an algorithm determined by a combination of the individual reader's Internet usage, and the content of the article. However,if you have an advertiser willing to pay for the banner ad at the top of all the Greenshire Eco Farm Articles, I could change the code from Google Adsense to display that particular ad. Please advise the advertiser that family-friendly Banner Ads start at $10 per month.

Why we use Google Adsense Ads

When we first set up Omemee Pigeon eFlyer, we optimistically posted a donation button, where people could express their gratitude for the hours of work put into posting events, news, articles, and ads for local businesses. Some of our readers have kindly given us gifts in kind for our work - movie rentals, soap, herbal remedies, food, drinking water, yard maintenance, transportation, and computer repair. However some bills need cash thrown at them - specifically Hydro and Internet, and our tip jar has yet to receive a single donation. Thankfully, two American readers admired our local coverage so much, they paid us to review their sites, which was an immense help in lower viewer months. Google Adsense Ads also help pay for the Hydro and Internet charges incurred in posting the .Omemee Pigeon eFlyer online. For further information about Google Adsense Ads,you may wish to read our policies page.

Sincerely,
Suzanne Sholer B.A. B.Ed.

Omemee UCW Fighting Childbirth Mortality - Female Genital Mutilation!

Omemee United Church Women Celebrate Golden Anniversary

Trinity United Church Omemee UCW will celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a special service and luncheon Sunday, May 27th, beginning at 11:15 a.m. Fifty years of what? What is it these women have been up to for the last fifty years? What does the UCW do? United Church women work for justice.

What is the UCW?

The United Church Women, formed in 1962 when two organizations with impressive legacies combined:Woman's Association and the Woman's Missionary Society. Over the last 50 years the UCW has upheld the faith and commitment of the women of the past while taking on challenges of each new decade and forming an equally impressive legacy for women of the future. True to their multi-talented and energetic record, the women of the UCW are celebrating this 50-year milestone in a number of ways.

UCW Anniversary Song:Tapestry of Love

The UCW Anniversary song 'A Tapestry of Love' celebrates the many women who work together for justice through the United Church of Canada. What an inspiring video.

Anniversary Book: Ordinary Heroes

'From the introduction to the book - Living Out Our Purpose by Betty TurcoTT:

An anniversary is a time to look back, around, and hopefully ahead. The book,'Ordinary Heroes gives a wonderful snapshot of UCW work over the past 50 years. It offers an excellent opportunity to look at what the United Church Women, have been doing over the last half century and also to ask how they might adjust their course as we move into the future.'
The forward goes on to briefly critique how the UCW have been faring over the past 50 years in living up to their four pillars of the UCW purpose: witness, study, fellowship, and service. Betty looks briefly at the challenges the UCW has faced over the years, and the current challenges facing the UCW as they work together for justice.

Anniversary Project:Funding Midwife Training Courses for Women

The National UCW Anniversary project is to raise $50,000 to fund midwife training courses at the Morogoro Women Training Centre in Tanzania. These training courses also help support women in the fight against female genital mutilation. In Tanzania, there are over 1000 deaths each day due to complications from pregnancy and childbirth. 80%of these births do not take place in a hospital or clinic.  Many traditional birth assistants have had no formal training,, and most alarming, the same women who attend births also perform Female Genital Mutilation of girls and young women despite it being illegal.  The maternal health care worker courses will have an anti-FGM and anti gender violence message.  The course content will professionalize birth assistants and provide additional training in nutrition as well as training in Emergency First Aid and CPR.  The goal is to equip women, from remote communities, with skills like community health care workers or First Responders.

Image Mogoro Women Traing Centre Planning Maternal Training Course

The course will also provide the Maternal Health Care Workers with strategies to replace income lost when they stop performing FGM procedures.  $50,000 will fund Midwife training for more than 60 women in Tanzania including:travel, accommodation, food, classes, a medical kit, and a solar LED lighting system. If you would lke to help with this project, donations can be made by cheque to The United Church of Canada, mark it for the UCW 50th Anniversary Project, and mail to: Dorothy Amos, NUCW Administrator, 3250 Bloor Street West, Suite 300, Toronto, ON M8X 2Y4. (Ensure that your name and address are clearly shown so that a taxable deduction receipt can be sent. What a great way to celebrate the birth of a healthy baby into your family!

Lindsay Police Arrest Reaboro Man!

Reaboro Boozey Runner Luck Runs Out!

Running for party supplies? Don't choose a partier! A Reaboro man is probably wishing he had called a bottle delivery service, rather than driving to Lindsay when his supply ran out. Thanks to a call from a responsible Lindsay Liquor retailer, the boozy driver was removed from the roads before he could harm himself or others.

Lindsay Police Services logo

58 year old Reaboro man found himself in the custody of the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service yesterday after an officer stopped him on Highway 35 south of Lindsay following allegations from one of Lindsay’s liquor retailers that the male was impaired and operating a vehicle.
Shortly before 2pm yesterday, a retailer of liquor contacted police advising a male who had been drinking, had just purchased alcohol, gotten into a vehicle, and proceeded to drive away. The caller was able to provide police with a correct licence plate and description of the vehicle.
The officer was able to locate the vehicle on Highway 35 and demanded the male provide a roadside sample of his breath. After failing the roadside device, the male punched the officer in the face.
Robert TULLY of Reaboro has been arrested and charged with operating a vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol and assaulting police.
Mr. TULLY is to appear in court on June 28th of 2012.

Your Call Can Save Lives- Here's How

Kawartha Lakes Police Service wish to remind the public of the importance of a correct licence plate and description of the vehicle when calling police with information or an allegation. If you spot an impaired driver, jot down the licence plate and description of the vehicle, then call 911 and ask for the Police. It may be the life of a friend or family member that you save.

Ontario Farmers Gain New BioAmber Markets!

New BioAmber Plant Will Utilize 20K Grain Acres Yearly!

image AgAnnex banner

Ontario Federation of Agriculture is pleased with BioAmber's announcement to proceed with the construction of a world class bio-processing plant in Sarnia, Ontario. BioAmber will source Sarnia area feedstock including corn and wheat beginning in 2013 to produce bio-succinic acid, used in food and beverages, industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals.

“This is wonderful news for the local economy,” says Mark Wales, OFA President. “In addition to the jobs that will be created, local sourcing of feedstock enhances transportation logistics and reduces costs.”

Once BioAmber is running at full production, it will create a new opportunity for the marketing of corn and wheat for Ontario farmers. The company’s initial grain requirement is equivalent to 15,000 to 20,000 acres of production per year. The green chemistry involved in BioAmber’s processes will also support the manufacturing of other products in the Sarnia industrial complex, making the complex a more robust offering overall.
“Ontario farmers have proven their ability to produce high quality crops in a sustainable manner,” says Wales. “Farmers are committed to programs such as the Environmental Farm Plan, and we are proud to see our environmental efforts carry through the value chain.”

This initiative supports Ontario producers’ efforts to find new markets for biomass crops for energy, bio-products or bio-processing. Since 2010, OFA has been examining opportunities to enhance biomass value chain initiatives based on funding received under the “Generate Energy for Ontario by Developing an Innovative Agricultural Biomass Value Chain Sector” project. Investment in this project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In Ontario, this program is delivered by the Agricultural Adaptation Council.

As Canada Road Safety Week activities wrapped up, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report seven people were killed in seven separate collisions on OPP-patrolled roads and highways.

“The number of tragic fatalities could have been much higher had we not increased our visibility and enforcement throughout the province.' confided Commissioner Chris Lewis adding 'Sadly, even one death on our roads is one too many.”

Food Safety Concerns Increases Organic Food Box Interest!

Ontario food scares continue to grow. Are you asking where their food comes from? Do you wonder what has been done to your food before you get it to feed your family? Increasing numbers of Ontario families are asking the same questions.

There’s growing awareness of the toxins in sprays used on crops, increasing evidence of the harmful effects of GMOs, and now critics are alarmed about Ontario’s 'loosening of the rules around spreading sewage sludge -- potentially laced with pharmaceuticals like Viagra -- on Ontario farm fields'. People are concerned about potential health risks.

Increasingly, people are searching for ‘clean’ local food. One of the best ways is to get acquainted with local farmers and their growing practices, choose one whose methods you like, and partner with them in a Community Shared Agriculture program.

Community Shared Agriculture Program -What Is It?

Community Shared Agriculture programs are traditionally arranged by making an up-front investment for the full season in an amount determined by the farmer. This ‘Food Box’ program ensures your weekly share of fresh produce throughout the growing season. The partner-owners of Greenshire Eco Farms are “Thinking Outside the Box” in offering a unique type of CSA that pleases the palate, the pocketbook and offers more choices. The ‘surprise’ a more traditional type of CSA program, is also available.

About Greenshire Eco Farm:Greenshire Eco Farms has provided two seasons of their ‘Field to Plate’ CSA food box program, founded their Healing Horse Centre, and this season are venturing into Agri-tainment as a fun and educational destination. Their amazing progress is due to the dedicated owner-partners, their sponsors, and loyal customer-partners. A diverse group, they work co-operatively toward creating their dream. A permaculture farm, and home of the Healing Horse Centre, Greenshire is located at 1563 Pigeon Lake Rd., halfway between Lindsay and Bobcaygeon. Check http://greenshireecofarms.com/ for details and upcoming workshops, or phone 705-879-4207.

NDP Urges Stop McGuinty Majority!

NDP Andrea Howarth Launches Fundraising Campaign!

Andrea Howarth NDP just issued a challenge to stop the McGuinty Government from attaining a majority.:

Last October the people of this province sent politicians a simple message: work together and focus on the challenges faced by everyday people. Instead, Dalton McGuinty has decided that working together is too much work and has forced a by-election in Kitchener-Waterloo.

I am asking members, supporters, voters and anyone who wants to stop a McGuinty majority, to join our Money blitz challenge and help us raise $200,000 on Thursday, May 31st .

Make a donation right now. Give $25, $50, $75 or whatever you can.

Unlike the Liberals and Conservatives who rely on their corporate friends for donations, New Democrat strength comes from everyday people like you.

Watch my new video.

Together we can ensure that the Liberals are not rewarded for their cynical power grab and stop a McGuinty majority in its tracks.

Andrea Horwath,
Leader, Ontario New Democrats
