Omemee Legion Hosts Great Trio!
Saturday,June 30 Omemee Legion hosted Don Elfner Trio. Don Elfner formerly of the Bear Hug Band entertained guests with excellent musical stylings, playing great oldies and favourites that made you want to dance all night. The trio performed so well,it was surprising to find out that this was their first performance together.
Some may know Don Elfner, as a new Legion member,who is readily lending a hand at Legion functions,and the Tuesday lunch group will recognize the bass guitarist from the Legion lunches she arranges as well. We recorded several selections from the Don Elfner Trio on Saturday. Enjoy!

You’re Euchred! Where Did That Saying Come From?
Omemee Seniors Club meets to play Euchre each Thursday from December to June, at the Omemee Legion Hall. It’s a $3 admission for members, with the card game starting at 1 p.m. Once in a while,another event may take precedence at the Omemee Legion Fall.so it is wise to give the President, Frank Martichenko from Cavan (705) 944-5467 or Marion Wellman (705) 799-6951. Neither Frank ,nor Marion could be reached for comment at the time of posting.What is Euchre, and Where Did This Curious Phrase Come From?

Downeyville Student Ontario Public Speaking Championship Contender
Heather Cadigan, Grade Two, Enjoys Making Audiences Laugh
April 30, seven year-old, Heather Cadigan, competes in Orillia at the provincial primary championship against three other Ontario students. While most people are uncomfortable with public speaking, grade two student ,Heather Cadigan, would like to make a career out of it some day.
The St. Luke’s Catholic School student won first place with her speech ‘If I were a principal for a day.’ on April 9th at the Royal Canadian Legion’s District public speaking competition in the primary division in Kingston.
This was Heather’s fourth first place finish, having previously won the Omemee local branch competition, the zone, and area competitions in Woodville.
In an interview with Emily Johnson, co-op student for This Week; James, Heather’s father, revealed, “She shows no signs of nervousness, and never speaks of being nervous. Heather loves public speaking she counts down the days for every competition.”
Heather confided,“I made the audience laugh when I told them if I were the principal for the day I would make the teachers scrub the toilets.”
Heather’s experience as a performer in two Globus Theatre productions - Cinderella, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves at the Lakeview Arts Barn, has been a boon to her in increasing her comfort level in front of an audience.

It is not easy to get to a remote cabin on Whitewater Lake, Ontario, deep in the heart of the Wabakimi Provincial Park wilderness. From Omemee, you might drive northwest about 1400 km on Trans-Canadian Highway 11 to a tiny little town named Armstrong. A more scenic route, about 180 km longer,-:Trans-Canadian Highway 17--veers northwest as well, but you’d pass through Sudbury, Sault St. Marie and Thunder Bay, kissing the northern shores of Lakes Huron and Superior. Either way, you’d need an outfitter from Armstrong to fly you another 60 km north, skimming the treetops, and flirting with the early Canadian sunrise, at least if you want to Sunday, April 10, 2011

A bridge duffer was polishing a lamp and… poof! Out popped a genie who said, “I will grant you one wish.”
The duffer unfolded a map of the world and said, “Let all of these countries live in peace and harmony.”
“You’ve got to be kidding! I’m only a genie.”
The duffer thought for a while and then suggested, “OK, then make me a winning bridge player.”
“Hmm… ” the genie pondered. “Let me see that map again.

Arrive Early !Drop in to enjoy the music, or join in the fun with your acoustic instrument. Fun starts at 2 p.m. and goes on for hours. Overflow seating in the side lounge.
Free parking makes for an budget priced afternoon of fun. .
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 497 at 46 King Street East, holds an acoustic jam session every other Saturday afternoon. Meat roll and 50/50 Draw means you could even go home a little richer!
