Cross-Border Cribbage Inspires Writer

Universal Obscure Cribbage Language Unites Players

Guest post by Jordan Wiklund

Beaver plane set for take off It is not easy to get to a remote cabin on Whitewater Lake, Ontario, deep in the heart of the Wabakimi Provincial Park wilderness. From Omemee, you might drive northwest about 1400 km on Trans-Canadian Highway 11 to a tiny little town named Armstrong. A more scenic route, about 180 km longer,-:Trans-Canadian Highway 17--veers northwest as well, but you’d pass through Sudbury, Sault St. Marie and Thunder Bay, kissing the northern shores of Lakes Huron and Superior. Either way, you’d need an outfitter from Armstrong to fly you another 60 km north, skimming the treetops, and flirting with the early Canadian sunrise, at least if you want to

“You’ve got to be kidding! I’m only a genie.”

The duffer thought for a while and then suggested, “OK, then make me a winning bridge player.”

“Hmm… ” the genie pondered. “Let me see that map again.

Bridge Basics

If you are new to Bridge, there are some excellent free online resources that can help you quickly pick up Bridge Basics, but there is nothing like first-hand experience to help it all come together.
Richard Pavlicek, Grand Life Master, in the American Contract Bridge League, offers this advice about learning to play Bridge:

Four Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Podcasts Feature Omemee

Omemee is fortunate to have the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail running along behind both Lady Eaton Elementary School, and Scott Young Public School. On the other hand, perhaps it is the rail trail that is fortunate to be located by the schools, since the students at both schools play an active part in maintaining the trail.
The Green Trails Alliance has a series of FREE downloads hikers can add to their play lists to enjoy at home or while traveling the rail trail.
Omemee is located about midpoint on the 44 km rail trail that stretches east to Peterborough County, and west to Durham Region. Omemee is mentioned on one third of the twelve podcasts available for download.

Omemee Recycling Day Blue Box Today!

Save Money! Reduce Your Waste!

Recycling Day ? While some people call it Garbage Day, every Tuesday in Omemee is Recycling Day. City of Kawartha Lakes has a two bag garbage collection limit-anything more than that needs to have a pre-paid tag, or you can take it to the landfill. Either option will cost you $3.
Every Tuesday, Omemee residents can reduce their garbage by recycling their waste. On alternate Tuesdays, Omemee has either green fibre (paper) or blue container (plastics, tin) pick up. Please don’t try to recycle anything contaminated with pet waste or motor oil-that’s garbage. Recycled containers must be placed in a recycling bin. They will not be picked up if they are bagged. The only recyclables accepted in bags are shredded paper in a clear plastic bag, or plastic bags bagged in another plastic bag.
Here’s the low down on what you can and can’t put in the recycling bins as well as a few ideas for reusing and rethinking to reduce waste. Please add your ideas in the comments, and we’ll add them to the chart. Download a free Recycling Calendar from the City of Kawartha Lakes site, it  has a tonne of handy info. Click here.
