Hop All Ages Hit Movie!

Hop Sheds Light on Easter Mysteries

Do you know where jelly beans come from? Hop, rated PG, for some mild rude humour, is a fun family romp.

E.B. is the teenage son of the Easter Bunny, but he doesn't want to follow in the pawprints of his father. E.B. runs away to Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a drummer. In Hollywood, he meets Fred, an unemployed slacker who doesn't want to settle for just any job. E.B. pretends he is hurt, and persuades Fred to take him in. E.B. is a terrible houseguest. Back on Easter Island, a power-hungry chick, plots to become the Easter Chick and change Easter. E.B. discovers who he really wants to be, which brings Fred and E.B. together to a showdown to save Easter from the chick.

Hop:Movie Review

My teen and I both thoroughly enjoyed Hop. There are laughs for all ages in the movie, some of which will not even be picked up on by younger viewers. We were especially impressed with some of the extra little touches in the animation, that made E.B. a very believable character. As for the rude humour, well you will never look at a jelly bean quite the same way again. One scene in China, did give us pause, and it also must have been of concern to others too, because right at the very end of the credits, it is revisited. While this treatment does help fix the problem somewhat, we wondered how many people would even see the revisit, due to where it is placed. We think the revisited scene would have better comedic timing,if it were placed before the credits.

Hop:Special Features Review

Special features in the Hop DVD are aimed at teens and up. It was disappointing that there were no special features for younger children. Since we liked the animation so much, we hoped the special features would include insights into the animation process. The special feature that was played repeatedly in our home was the 'All Access Pass with Cody Simpson'. Have a teen daughter? Have your ear plugs ready for when they discover this section of the special features.
We give Hop four jelly beans out of five. Check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think.
Suzanne
Hop is now available for rental just in time for Easter at Mister Convenience, King Street East, Omemee. There are two copies of the movie, but you may want to call ahead to be sure it is available.

Earl Scruggs Influence Lives Here!

EARL EUGENE SCRUGGS (Jan. 26, 1924 - Mar. 28, 2012)
by Gerry Mitchell

I was very sad to hear that Earl Scruggs passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88.

If you have ever had an interest in a stringed instrument, I encourage you to explore this man's life, and his contribution to banjo players everywhere. The internet will undoubtedly be the best place to find information about his life and accomplishments.
I don`t believe there is a banjo player out there who has not been influenced by Earl in some way and I am no exception.

First Encounters with Earl Scruggs Style

In the winter of 1974/75, I was attending College in Kingston, Ontario. My friend Joe, invited me to his place to meet some friends who were visiting from his home town of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He told me they would be playing a guitar and a banjo, and that I might enjoy listening to them. I had heard banjo music on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show, as well as the Bonnie & Clyde, and Deliverence movies. The experience of hearing it live was something special. I must have had a thousand questions for the banjo player. He told me the music was called Bluegrass, and he used a three finger style of picking developed by Earl Scruggs.

Earl Scruggs Treasure Discovered

Two years later while browsing a pawn shop in Toronto, Ontario I spotted some banjos. The sight of the banjos sent my mind back to that day at Joe's. I went home with a $50 banjo, and a renewed passion to play. I took that banjo with me to my first Bluegrass Festival in Carlisle, Ontario where I found the holy grail- an Earl Scruggs instruction book!

Thank You Earl Scruggs

After two months, and daily repetition of the three finger pattern rolls laid out in Earl's book, I started to hear something that resembled the sound I heard that day in Kingston three years earlier.
The beast had been tamed, and another banjo player was spawned by Earl Scruggs.
Damn! Another one! Oh no!
Thank you Earl for sharing your gift with us.
Rest in peace.

Mount Horeb Freedom Valley Horse Rescue Horse Finds New Home!

Christine Markle-Welch of Freedom Valley Horse Rescue shares a happy tale about a horse that almost went to the meat grinder, but now has a happy new home. We hope you will enjoy this article from the Freedom Valley Horse Rescue blog too.

Finding Echo

March 17th, we outbid the meat buyers for a lovely 12 yr old chestnut-Arab cross gelding. He was trained to ride- they said that he was a trail horse. He handled very well, and is quite nice! After getting to know him,we decided to name him Echo.

Echo- Even Better Than Expected

I am thrilled to let you know how wonderful Echo turned out to be. He is older than we thought, and does need his teeth done. Echo rides and handles like a dream. He has a lovely smooth gait, I am so happy we saved him!!!

Echo Finds a Loving Home

My good friend came out to meet him, she was looking for a good older horse for her daughter. They took him home this morning.
Later this afternoon, we went to visit. Lo and behold, what do I see as we are pulling up the driveway? The youngest daughter already riding Echo! My heart swelled, and it did bring tears to my eyes! I felt like the proudest Mom in the world!! Echo is a tolerant fellow, such a good, good boy!! Oh MY GOSH!! To think he could have gone for meat last week! YaY!!!

Wearing the Green!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world by people Irish,or not. On Saint Patrick's Day. People brush off the old Irish tunes,Irish tales, Irish movies, and celebrate Celtic heritage in general.

From live shamrock plants, to cakes, to candles, to green beer;you can find a wide variety of green products even in small places like Omemee, Millbrook, and Fowler's Corners - but what is Saint Patrick's Day really all about?

Who was Saint Patrick?

Patrick was born in Wales, captured by invaders, and sold into slavery in Ireland at age 16. He escaped six years later and returned to his family. later, after joining the church,Patrick returned to Ireland as an ordained bishop in the north and west of the island. There are many legends about Patrick including one in which he rids Ireland of snakes, and another being his explanation of Christianity using the Shamrock. By the seventh century Patrick was recognized as the patron saint of Ireland.
Saint Patrick's Day is observed on March 17, the date of Patrick's death. It is celebrated both inside and outside Ireland, as both a liturgical and non-liturgical holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemn and a holy day of obligation; and, outside Ireland, it can be a celebration of Ireland itself.

You can find Shamrocks and more at Butternut Folk Art 18 King East, Omemee.

Youngtown Museum Omemee Offers Reward!

Omemee Museum Needs Your Help!

Youngtown Museum needs your help catching culprits in the act. Vandalism, and careless truck drivers are cutting deep into the operating budget at Ontario's first Rock and Roll Museum. Youngtown Museum is offering a reward for direct information, photos, or evidence of anyone causing damage to the property at 45 King St. E. Omemee.

Youngtown Museum Targeted by Vandals

Between February 15th and March 1st, security lights at the back of Youngtown Museum at 45 King St. East Omemee were broken on THREE different occasions over the weekends. As a result, the museum was forced to replace the lights three times, and re-wire them to the second floor. Several days later, posters at the side of building were also removed.

Youngtown Museum Targeted by Truckers

Since early spring of 2011, large trucks turning right onto Colborne Street off King Street have been cutting the corner exceptionally wide, driving over the corner of the property, and narrowly missing the building. Despite concerns expressed to the local grocery store, about how this careless driving is endangering residents and damaging property, the careless driving problem has continued.

Youngtown Rock Rolled

Last year Youngtown Museum took action to deter this careless driving by digging in a large boulder and steel rod to discourage the driver, but without success. Tuesday March 13th, a large truck once again cut the corner, this time even dislodging the huge boulder.
'Make no mistake, the turn can be made by these vehicles without the crossing of our sidewalks, grass and so on.' shared Trevor Hosier, Youngtown Museum founder, adding, 'Someone will be hurt, or the museum will be seriously damaged. This is an act of vandalism so far as we are concerned.'
Youngtown Museum is asking people to please, watch for these truckers and other vandals - get a license number, take a photo of the truck or persons, call Police. They are offering a reward for direct information, photos, or evidence of anyone causing damage to the property at 45 King St. E. Omemee. Your help is needed and appreciated.

Yankee Line Woman Arrested Twice!

One Day-Two Locations-Four Charges!

A Yankee Line woman had a busy day with the Peterborough Lakefield Police.

Wal-Mart Loss Prevention Officer Foils Theft

March 8, 2012 at approximately 11:15 a.m. a Wal-Mart loss prevention officer watched a woman select various make-up items off the shelf, slip the items into her jacket, then place the empty packaging back on the shelves. The woman then walked out of the store without paying for the items.

The loss prevention officer approached the woman outside the store, and arrested her for theft. The total value of the theft was approximately $53.12. During the arrest, the woman compounded her problems by providing false information. Police were called, and as a result of the investigation, Kasey Michelle Skitch, 23, of Yankee Line Ennismore, was charged with theft under $5,000, and obstructing police. She was released from custody and will appear in court on those charges March 29, 2012.

Drug Trafficking and Careless Driving Charge

Later that same evening, Kasey was arrested on drug trafficking charges, when she and two buddies were pulled over by police on Chemong Road north of Peterborough. Once again Kasey compounded her difficulties by backing into the police vehicle. Kasey along with 29 year old William Martin Dashuk of Bridgenorth, and 30 year old Christopher James Gonder of Peterborough, will appear in court May 3rd on those charges.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Ends Over 200 Year Tradition!

Britannica Ends Print Edition, Goes Completely Digital!

Are we creating a society where access to knowledge is denied to the poor?
Once, if you needed to research a school project, you could borrow encyclopedias from the library if your family didn't have a set at home. This option went the way of the Dodo long ago.

Coronation Hall Omemee

"We haven't had print encyclopedias at the Omemee Library Branch for years.' shared the local librarian, adding 'We do have a digital encyclopedia that people can access online.'

Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc., announced it is ceasing publication of the 32-volume printed edition of its flagship encyclopedia, continuing with the digital versions that have become popular with knowledge seekers in recent decades.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica, which has been primarily an online product for almost 20 years, will cease to be available in book form for the first time in 244 years when the current stock runs out. Encyclopaedia Britannica was originally published in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1768, and has been in print continuously ever since.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Digital Information Pioneers

“The end of the print set is something we’ve foreseen for some time,” said Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. “It’s the latest step in our evolution from the print publisher we were, to the creator of digital learning products we are today.”

The company began exploring digital publishing in the 1970s and created the first digital version of the Britannica—likely the first digital encyclopedia ever—for LexisNexis users in 1981. It published the first multimedia encyclopedia on CD-ROM in 1989 and the first encyclopedia on the Internet in 1994.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Offers Numerous International Digital Education Resources

As Britannica expanded and diversified its Internet reference services in the years since, it also used its acquired expertise in online education to move beyond reference and into the $10 billion school curriculum and digital-learning markets, developing instructional programs and e-books in math, science and the humanities now used in classrooms around the world.

In announcing plans to discontinue the iconic 32-volume set, Cauz emphasized that numerous digital versions of the encyclopedia—as well as other Britannica databases for all ages—are widely available, continuously updated and significantly larger than the content in the printed encyclopedia. The online versions serve more than 100 million people worldwide, and a new app that delivers the whole encyclopedia to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch was recently launched.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Adding More Community Features

The company is also moving vigorously in developing community features for its online users. At Britannica Online School Edition PreK-12, teachers share lesson plans. Britannica Online allows readers to make revisions directly to the encyclopedia, which are then published after editorial review and revision if necessary. Britannica language and dictionary subsidiary Merriam-Webster.com boasts community features in which visitors share thoughts on words and usage.

“We’re digital, we’re mobile, and we’re social,” said Cauz. “We’re a very different company from 20 or 30 years ago.”

Encyclopaedia Britannica Product Quality Maintained

What hasn’t changed, said Cauz, is the way Britannica products are created and maintained. The company has a worldwide network of thousands of expert contributors and a staff of more than 100 editors who edit, review and fact-check Britannica content to make sure it’s accurate, reliable and up-to-date. Contributors include many scholars, Nobel laureates and world leaders, such as Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu, Ian Rankin, Francisco Jose̒ Ayala, Jody Williams, Chris Evert and Tony Hawk. The company works with and consults educators and instructional designers extensively in creating its classroom products.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Offers Free One Week Trial

To mark the retirement of the print set, the entire contents of the Britannica.com website will be available free for one week beginning today. More information is available at the Britannica blog.

However, this is of little consequence for families who lack funds to purchase a computer or an Internet connection.

About Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc.:

Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. is a global leader in education publishing whose products are available in many media, including online, wireless devices and books. A pioneer in digital publishing since the early 1980s, the company markets a variety of curriculum products for schools, language-study courses, online learning services, encyclopedias and other reference works, management solutions and language products through its Merriam-Webster subsidiary. Many of them are available at britannicastore.com. The company is located in Chicago.

Royal Canadian Mint Offers Silver Jubilee Coins!

Celebrating The 60th anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The Royal Canadian Mint has issued several new coins in celebration of Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee. Local post offices carry coin sets each in recognition of 20 years of Queen Elizabeth's rule which retail for 19.95. If you are looking for an extra special coin to mark this very unique and special occasion, the Mint has more exclusive offerings as well.

Limited Edition Coins Marking Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee

THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE - $50 GOLD AND $20 SILVER ULTRA-HIGH RELIEF COINS
The wait is over for the official celebration of the 60th anniversary of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada. The Mint is proud to mark the occasion with exciting new proof, ultra-high relief gold and silver coins.

In a contemporary effigy by Canadian portrait artist Laurie McGaw, the profile of Queen Elizabeth II regally stands out on the Mint's first ultra-high relief gold coin. Crafted of 99.999% pure gold and bearing a $50 face value, this amazing coin was created through an innovative technique which pushes the apex of the design's relief to extreme heights normally found only in medallic art. Striking the purest gold in the world at such a high relief presented a mix of challenges and advantages due to the softness, malleability, and flow rate of gold. The result is an image of extraordinary height and fluidity in a rare coin limited to a world-wide mintage of 500 and retailing for $2,999.99 CDN.

A 99.99% pure silver, $20 face value version of this coin design was quadruple-struck and hand polished to create coins which are individual works of art, given the minute differences in surface contours imparted by the extensive handcrafting of each coin. Only 7,500 of these fine collectibles have been crafted and each retail for $129.95 CDN.

DND Long Term Disability Disadvantage Veterans!

LEGION SAYS DND LONG TERM DISABILITY
DISADVANTAGES VETERANS

Department of National Defence delays are causing great hardship for injured veterans. March 8th The Royal Canadian Legion issued the following Press Release explaining the problems injured veterans arecexperieng.

Canadian Forces members who have been injured in the service of their country should all be treated equitably says Patricia Varga, the Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion.

Under regulatory changes introduced by Veteran’s Affairs Canada (VAC) as a result of the New Veterans Charter (NVC), the Earning Loss Benefit assures a $40,000 pre-tax yearly benefit to assist injured veterans with meeting basic human needs like food, shelter and clothing. However, the Department of National Defense Long Term Disability insurance SISIP (a service persons’ insurance program), provides only 75% of the pre-release salary for those veterans who are medically released.

While the intention was to ensure that both the Earning Loss Benefit and the SISIP Long Term Disability payments were equal; DND continues to delay their portion. The inexplicable delay has created not only a huge inequity between injured veterans, the delay is causing significant financial hardship and is seriously disadvantaging the most vulnerable veterans and their families.

The Royal Canadian Legion welcomed the necessary regulatory changes implemented with the NVC and while VAC has provided the enhanced Earning Loss Benefit payments since October 2011, despite pleas to the Minister of National Defence, DND has not stepped up to the plate.

“This is another example of the Government creating different classes of veterans,” says Varga. “The government has an obligation to recognize the sacrifice of all Canadian Forces members who have been injured in the service to Canada” she continues. “It is inconceivable that two government departments can treat the most vulnerable of our veterans in such a divergent manner,” she concludes.

Post Secondary Tuition Framework Extended!

Tuition Framework Extended for Colleges and Universities

Post secondary students of all income brackets will benefit from a tuition cap placed on Ontario colleges and universities.

Glen Murray, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities issued the following statement this week:
The Ontario government is extending for one year, a cap of five per cent on overall tuition fee increases at its colleges and universities.

No changes are being contemplated that would require all universities to set standard tuition fees for arts and science programs.

However, the province will continue to provide a 30 per cent rebate on tuition for college and university students for many families.

Families know that investing in postsecondary education is the key to a successful workforce, and a vibrant economy, and the Ontario government believes in supporting families.

Ontario continues to have one of the most generous student aid packages in the country. It's our plan to eliminate the deficit while protecting education.

Omemee Mum Births Quads!

Quads Birthed in Omemee Home!

Four new residents increased the population of Omemee in the wee hours of Thursday, March 8th during a home delivery that was at times touch and go. While the mother and babies are all doing well, there were some tense moments as the third baby got caught in the birth canal and needed to be manually extricated.
To protect the privacy of the mother and babies their location is not being disclosed at this time. Omemee Pigeon eFlyer congratulates Beana and her family on the birth of her new additions- four adorable Shih Tzu puppies!

Kids on The Block Puppets on Your Block!

CMHA-Peterborough Branch is pleased to once again be offering performances of the Kids on the Block, a special troupe of educational puppets that dress and act like real children. Each one has definite likes and dislikes, hopes and fears, talents and limitations. And, like real children, some have differences such as mental, physical and emotional disabilities.

They offer ten lively, upbeat shows designed by Kids on the Block Inc., that deal with the important issues of children's mental health, being a child of divorced parents, and bullies and school safety. Through a new partnership with Epilepsy Peterborough they are also offering two shows about epilepsy.

Kids on the Block will be appearing in free performances over the March Break at area libraries including three rural libraries- Omemee, Bruce Johnston Branch Cavan, and Millbrook. The Omemee performance will be Monday March 12 at 10:30 am; Bruce Johnston on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 am; and the Millbrook performance takes place Wednesday March 14 at 10 am. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar.

Omemee - 20 Year Vision!

Tomorrow Today Session Results!

Omemee residents gathered October 26, 2011 to take part in the 'Tomorrow Today' Workshop Session. The purpose of the session was to get input from residents into the City of Kawartha Lakes Secondary Plan for Omemee. Today, the results of that session and the following online survey were made public by Michael Benner,
Manager of Policy Planning for City of Kawartha Lakes.
The purpose of the Secondary Plans was to identify effective and efficient development patterns and opportunities, while taking into account current municipal conditions, reflecting Provincial land use planning policy as outlined in the Provincial Policy Statement 2005 (PPS), and to co-ordinate with and implement the policies of the City of Kawartha Lakes Official Plan.
Each of five designated communities in City of Kawartha Lakes was asked to develop vision statements based on goals and objectives identified during public consultation sessions.Six topic-driven policy papers will be developed in order to respond to the vision statements. Finally, the Five Draft Area Specific Secondary Plans with all policies and relevant mapping will be prepared.
The summary released today, reflects the vision statements resulting from two inter-related community visioning exercises, the “Tomorrow Today” workshops held in each community and the “Community Vision Vote” on-line survey.

'Tomorrow Today' Workshop Process

The Tomorrow Today' Workshop consisted of two parts.
1. An individual and group visioning exercise, where they developed their own 20-year vision statement for our settlement area.
2.A “Councillor for a Day” exercise where they shared what they would do to make our community a better place if they were “Councillor for a
Day.”

Initial Vision Statements

Initial Vision Statements put forward by the people assembled included the following:
“Self-sustaining for employment, recreational and business facilities with a line-up of people willing to move to Omemee.”
“To remain unique and beautiful to (stop) the traffic in a good way and support the history.”
“A small town feel while being self-supportive.”
“Have a lot of parks and recreational facilities for summer and winter activities; all are accessible for young and old, and can be connected together.”
“Activities into the evening to remain active as well as facilities for locals and tourists; a senior’s facility.”
These statements showed how residents have an interest in maintaining Omemee’s unique identity while becoming a self sustaining community offering employment, recreational and residential opportunities for its residents.

Consulting Team Consolidates Vision Statements

The consulting team, hired by City of Kawartha Lakes consolidated the statements above into two vision statements:
“Over 20 years Omemee will grow as a self-sustaining community, enhance its own identity and character, and provide employment, recreational, and residential areas for all ages.”
“Over 20 years Omemee will grow as a healthy settlement area with a small town feel, will expand recreational opportunities, offering activities for all seasons and develop services for all ages.”

Initial Strategic Directions

The following strategic directions were identified during the “Councillor for a Day” exercise:
• Increase pride in our community
• Lift development freeze
• Encourage recreational activities
• Create new jobs
• Provide opportunities to live and work in the same community
• Provide accessible housing

Community Vision Vote Flops

An on-line “Community Vision Vote”, survey was prepared to provide additional opportunities for input to the community visioning process. However, only one person responded to this survey process. Due to the poor response to the survey, the consultants hired by City of Kawartha Lakes drafted a final version of the vision statement, and chose which of the strategic directions would be most important for our community.
The lack of response to this online survey, should not be perceived as apathy towards the process, but perhaps an examination of the methods utilized in communicating the existence of the survey needs to be conducted,as well as whether an online survey is the most appropriate method for getting feedback in our community.

The final vision statement and strategic directions drafted by the consultants for Omemee are as follows:

Omemee- 20 Year Vision Statement

'Over 20 years Omemee will grow as a self sustaining community with a small town feel, enhance its own identity and character, and provide employment, recreational, and residential areas for all ages and seasons.'

Recommended Strategic Directions

• Increase pride in our community
• Expand infrastructure to create growth
• Encourage recreational activities
• Create new jobs
• Provide opportunities to live and work in the same community
• Provide accessible housing

City of Kawartha Lakes Vision and Strategies

The above vision and strategies were combined with those of other communities in the City of Kawartha Lakes to arrive at the following vision and strategies for our area as a whole:

“Over 20 years, the Kawartha Lakes settlement areas will grow as healthy communities, provide new employment and educational opportunities to its residents, preserve the natural environment and cultural heritage, develop affordable and accessible housing for the changing population, and provide healthy, active recreational opportunities for local residents and tourists.”

Recommended Kawartha Lakes Strategic Directions

• Encourage economic development
• Improve infrastructure
• Preserve natural environment and improve the water quality
• Promote recreational activities
• Provide accessible housing (barrier-free)
• Promote healthy/active communities
• Preserve small town feel and unique identities

Next Steps

According to the report released today, the next steps in this process are as follows:
'Additional analysis will determine appropriate land use policies and land use designations. This will then lead to the first draft of the text and maps for the Secondary Plans, additional public consultation, and presentation of the plans for Council’s adoption.'

We can only hope that the 'additional public consultation' will be more accessible to more of our local residents.

The entire report can be read online on the City of Kawartha Lakes Website, and it is also available through the planning department. Alternately, you may request a copy of the report to be forwarded to you by leaving a comment below, or emailing http://scr.im/omemee
